Primary and Secondary DNS servers.

I've just come across a requirement to have a primary and secondary DNS server handed out by DHCP to my internal network.
A quick search through the forums allowed me to find the solution to this by some quick editing, but it would be nice for the option to be there.

I don't suppose you could let me know what you searched for, because a search on "DHCP DNS" on this forum doesn't bring up the solution to this.

The server announces itself as the primary and only DNS server to your clients via DHCP. There is no advantage in providing a secondary, and you are likely to break things if you try.

Okay, but suppose I need to put us a Secondary DNS server, because Network Solutions requires you to have both a primary and secondary DNS server when bringing up your own host server?

And along the same line it would be nice to have the option to run as a back domain controler.  ie a BDC.

Had similar problem, solved it by setting up 2 Red Hat 9 boxes as primary and secondary dns in the same domain as the main host mail/web server SME of course. RH9 DNS Manger is an absolute breeze to use with its new graphical interface. By the way have found Network Solutions and their Domain Manager interface a real pain, worth checking out Register.com theirs is easier to use and they respond much quicker to support issues.

(IMHO)

three words: Zone Edit Rocks.

www.zoneedit.com

(No I don't work for them or get a 'kick back' of any kind.  It's just a damn good service.)

PS - (1) If you are going to run DNS, Don't, get somone else to do it.  (2) If you must do it go with DJBDNS.
