Before the impending community release of a new ISO for SME it might be
prudent to take a careful look at the 'Printers' component of the Server
Manager and at printing in general; there appear to be a number of issues in
which the last Mitel release version has problems.
I just reinstalled my own server, because I had managed to bust Hylafax and
couldn't clear up the mess, and I've run into all sorts of problems. My
server was 6.03b with all updates and printing functioned perfectly,
providing network wide access to a Brother HL1260 on LPT1, and an Epson
Stylus Photo 950 on the first USB port. When I decided to reinstall I didn't
have the 6.0 ISO to hand, so I reinstalled 6.03b, and was intending to do
all of the updates as before; then I remembered that I had deleted them a
couple of weeks ago so I obtained a copy of 6.0 and upgraded with that. I
now have big problems printing.
My server is configured exactly as before, and I set up the same named
printers as before; when I came to try out the connected printers at one of
my Windows XP workstations, the system could plainly see the newly created
server printer hooks, but they didn't work - giving long delays while trying
to look at properties, and no print. So I deleted the shares on the
workstation and tried to recreate them - same long, long delays while the
workstation tried to make the connection, and the same result - no print
when I tried to use the printer.
Then I deleted the printer shares in the Server Manager, which also seemed
to take forever, and found that the loop back from the delete printer
dialogue to the printers page didn't work, simply stalling on a blank
browser window. If I choose the menu item 'Printers', again the table shows
the printer as deleted, but if I try to recreate a share with the same name
I get...
Error: An account with the same name exists with type:printer-deleted.
...and this persists after a server reboot.
I'm going to reinstall the server again using the 6.0 ISO and see if this
clears up the problem, but I thought the development team at Contribs should
know about it.
There are, incidentally, a couple of other broken pathways in the operation
of the Server manager of the 6 series SME betas and the 6.0 release - as an
example, try setting the time and saving it; this fails to restart the 'Date
and Time' subsystem and also results in a blank browser page.
