Backup to desktop stops at 3.99 GB?
« on: January 23, 2004, 04:55:27 PM »
Às topic. I'm not able to take a full backup of the server & data via the "backup to desktop" function?
I've no idea why it stops at 3.99 GB but I've tried several times with the same result :-(

Anybody know what can be wrong?

I'm using Windows XP SP1 for desktop backup - do you know if the filesize limit is 4GB?
I actually tought it could handle bigger files?

Well according to this: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/prkc_fil_tdrn.asp my NTFS-volume should be able to handle file-sizes up to at least 16 terabytes.
Anybody have a suggestion what the problem might be?

BTW: I've plenty of space left on the backup disk so that isn't the problem either  :-?

This issue has been answered many times in these forums. Do a search on backup and also on backup2ws for solutions/workaround.

In short the issue is to do with limitations of smb and tar, and also the inability of browsers to restore from files bigger than 2Gb.
The problem is unrelated to Win2K or XP ability to handle large ie >4Gb files sizes.

The answer is that you can only use the backup to desktop feature if your resultant backup file is less than 2Gb in size.

The alternative is to instal and use backup2ws (available from dmay contrib site) and set the file size limit to 2Gb (or just under). Backup2ws will split the backup file into a number of 2Gb pieces which can be successfully copied to a workstation and restored from.

Hope this helps

My bad. I actually though that you are referring to "backup to workstation" (backup2ws) contrib by Darrell May.
