hi there,

Please help me, i have a pc with two nic's, eth0 is connected to ADSL pots router, and eth1 is connected 2 a lan. My problem : i install sme 6 all seems ok, when it comes 2 configuring the server i do what i thinks right but obviously not! after configuring i cannot connect to the internet at all. i can ping the router fine but no internet access. what i really want is 2 have the pc's on the lan access the net through the sme server so that it acts as a firewall etc. i also would like to get dyndns working properly so that i can host a small webpage. All this i want, but if i cant even get internet access, i still got a long way to go. Anybody got any sugestions why it doesent work and if possible please guide me.
Thanx

Hi,
When you say "ping the router".
Is that the SMEserver or a modem/router?
Also if it is a modem/router how is it set up
routing or bridging?

There's a big difference if the ADSL box is a router or modem.  If it is a router, chances are that you need DHCP not PPPoe, although if you have been assigned an address you are probably ok - your ISP should be able to confirm this.
Presumably you have the correct ethernet interface connected to the WAN?
From your SME box, what does your routing table look like? (netstat -rn).  Can you ping an external IP address by number (e.g. dyndns primary server 63.208.196.92)?
If you can ping by number, but not by name, you need to tell give your system a DNS server to use - this is one of the options when you configure your system.  To test the theory, you could manually edit /etc/resolv.conf and add the line (e.g.) nameserver 63.208.196.92.

hi there,
yes, the router is definitly set up as ppoe and the router/modem recieves a new ip every day from the isp.
in the routing table i see three dev's 1 is eth0 and it has a static ip of 192.168.10.200 and nm 255.255.255.0, 2 is eth1 and it also has static of 192.168.0.1 and mn 255.255.255.0, there is a third and it is lo.
No, i cannot ping any external address. not my isp or its dns servers, or dyndns.
something else i notice, in netstat it doesent show any gateways, and i know the router's internal ip is 192.168.10.200, surely there should be a gw of that ip?
i have also given a nameserver of 196.25.1.11 when configuring the server.
Thanks for all your help so far.
regards warren

Warren,
Have a look at the online user manual - section 5.8 onward.

Most people seem to prefer bridging the modem/router and connecting directly to the SME server - less complicated.
