Topic: How to connect Win98SE box to SME5.5

Hello:)

I have just set up SME 5.5 successfully, however I can't work out from the documentation how to connect my Win98SE box to the server. Can anyone provide a step-by-step guide, assuming that I am unfamiliar with networking and SME/Linux in particular?

Hi,

I'm not very familiar with version 5.5.
But in version 5.6 there is a directory ( /home/e-smith/files/server-resources/regedit ) where you can find a .reg file for windows 98.

What's a .reg file? a registry file? Does this set up your network for you?

Try putting your win98 box in the same workgroup as the e-smith server.  Then you should be able to login to the box.  The netlogon.bat file on 5.5 is located here, /home/netlogon

We need a bit more info - what stage are you at?
Assuming a default SME install and a working network card in the windows box, it goes along the lines of:-

BTW please bear in mind, I am not abke to connect to my SME box from here, so this is all from memory

1) Configure your Windows network card to use an automatically assigned address - reboot - check that it has the correct address with 'ipconfig' (from a DOS window);
2) Using a web browser, connect to the SME box at http://ipaddressofSMEbox/server-manager (might be https, can't remember);
3) On the SME server manager web page, find the option to change the workgroup, and make it something sensible (win default is just WORKGROUP, but its up to you);
4) On the win PC, set the workgroup to the same as the server - reboot (probably - it will tell you);
5) You should now be able to browse the network, see you SME server, and the primary i-bay.  If not, try getting a DOS prompt up and enter:-
net show \\ipaddressOfSMEServer

Do all this, and if it still doesn't work, post back with details of where you got to and what errors you receive.

Aaaaaaargh, I've just made the most basic and stupid mistake. Because I haven't bought all the necessary bits for my network yet, I just tried to connect my Win98 box directly to the SME server..... but grabbed the wrong cable. Now i'm using the crossover cable, and I can see it on the network... I can't connect to the server with the web browser yet, but i'm sure I can sort that issue out!

ok I can connect to SME through the network, and I can see my I-bays. But when I try to connect to http://server/server-manager, I get an access denied (error 403).

When I boot up my win98 box, I get an error message that says the network was unable to connect to a domain server. Would this have anything to do with above?

Hi Bassman,
A couple of things you should do, first is your SME server set to be the domain controller? If so have you tried to add your Win98 box to the domain? If not do you need a domain? Or could you get away with a peer to peer network? Also try connecting to server manager like this https://sme_ip_address/server-manager and see if you can connect. I hope this helps.

In answer to your questions - in reverse:

Yes, I tried logging on with https://sme_ip_address/server-manager and got a 404 error.

I'm not sure if I set the domain up properly. Would it need to be in the format domainname.com (or similar) or just domainname? And then, how would I add my machine to the domain? I do want to use a domain, more for future reference than anything as I hope to set up more SME servers in the future.

1 be sure to be on the same segment. this means if your server is on 192.168.100.1, your Win98 machines should be on 192.168.100.2/3/4 with a netmask of 255.255.255.0
2 avoid the https for beginning
3 if you want to connect to the machine, just try http://IP/
4 do not use DHCP until you know what it does
5 try to logon in Win98 with a registered user+password on the SME (avoid root+admin, still)
 in network neighbourhood, you'll see your directory on the SME
6 If you need more help, define more of your achitecture hardware side
