Hi all,
Has anyone had experience installing qmail-scanner on SME 6.0 in order to use a comercial antivirus to scan incoming mails?

I am interested in the same thing. I am hoping someone has made a plugin for this. I really want to be able to choose what kind of attachments I want to filter without killing my server with something that will take up all my resources.

I cannot determine whether you're looking for a qmail virus scanner or some other kind scanner.

Anyhow, Darrell May, myezserver.com wrote a perfect rpm for including the RAV virus scanner into sme5.x. pannel (rav-sme55-howto.htm). This rpm still works on 6.0. It has a lot of options like those you need. Unfortunately M$ has as good as *killed* the company but virus updates are at the moment still available. After install you get a 60 day full working trial version. Plenty of time to find out how the scanner is embedded in Qmail.

Hi Pete,
Mailscanner looks interesting, any idea where the contrib is? I searched here but couldn't find it. Thanks.

Qmail scanner is a content scanner that you can set to look for particular attachments etc. It's good to use until your virus scanner is updated.

If you know MyDoom includes a particular type of attachment then you can put that info into q-mail and it will strip the attachment or delete the mail right away for you.

You can also use it to always stip out particular file types. So all .txt files can all ways be stripped etc.

Are there any other programs for e-smith that can do this?

I had a look at installing qmail-scanner but got stuck on the installation of the Perl Modules. When trying to do so through CPAN, it fails due to SME not having GCC, and I am reluctant to install it.

Anyone manage a workaround on this part?

ta!

Take a look at ASSP - it can do attachment stripping along with its main function of Baysean spam filtering.  Search contribs.org & you'll find the HOWTO - it really works!
