Topic: Configuring Windows to access SME

I'm running XP Pro and SME Linux.
The SME box runs just fine - I can access it fully under Win98 and Win NT4. I'm having difficulty accessing via XP Pro.

My server (zeus) is the Linux box.

I enclose the relevant info. Can anybody assist?

I pinged zeus (192.168.40.10) and came up with nothing under the name
but with a response under the number.

I set the Local Area connection up as
IP 192.168.40.12
aubnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.40.10
DNS Server 192.168.40.10
Wins server 192.168.40.10

Zeus (192.168.40.10) is setup to recognise 192.168.40.11 through
192.168.40.14

Zeus works. No problem with Zeus - my NT box and my 98 box both work well
with it.

The only way I can access files is via Internet Explorer FTP which means I
can read but not write

Hey M-Poo

Are u using static ip for any particular reason? If not change to dynamic for simplicity. What is your ppp conection ? Have you set the ip etc statically on your ppp(dial up?)and if so why?  Sounds like your dns resolution is heading off through your ppp for some  fun! Try disabling your ppp conection and see if that works, then work backwards from there.

I'm using a static IP principally because my whole network works on static IPs. The IP on my dial-up is dynamic. I was dialled up when I did the ipconfig. I've tried using the server both when I'm dailled up and when not. It still doesn't work.

The problem is XP, not the server. Microsoft has ensured that XP Pro is a major headache. I was tossing up whether to go for Mac or a Windows box when I built this computer. I was only 65% sure that I needed a Windows box as opposed to Mac. I need XP Pro to work properly (if that's possible with Windows).

I can still only use Internet Explorer to ftp my server. I cannot do anything else with it.
I can access via putty and ping but that's about all - except from httping the server manager page.

Well, I added
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\netlogon\parameters]
"RequireSignOrSeal"=dword:00000000
to the registry but I still cannot map the network drive. It still tells me it's not there. I tried pinging zeus and it worked. These are the new ping and ipconfig logs

Zeus is set up to permit only access from
192.168.40.11
192.168.40.12
192.168.40.13
192.168.40.14


Zeus will only map a network drive to 98 and to NT. XP rejects it as unknown.

All the systems run Outpost. Outpost is setup identically on all system, allowing access from 192.168.40.xx

I dont see a wins server setting on the XP machine. You need to add it under the advanced tab in your TCP/IP properties.

Ah. Now I don't have a Wins server setting setup on SME either.

It seems to want an IP address.

Should that be the same as my server IP address (192.168.40.10) or should it be different?

In your Network prefernces enter your SME servers IP-adress (192.168.40.10) as your WINS server.

I'll recap. The configuration is:
XP Pro connects to the Internet via a modem and to the server via Cat5 at 100mbps. I set the wins configuration but something's still missing as I still cannot map the server drive

I'm still no further advanced. My guess is that something's still wrong on XP.

The workgroup on XP is Workgroup (it's dones its own capitalisation) and workgroup on SME.

Does it bring up all the shares on the SME server?

I never configure WINS on any of my setups. IS your problem that you cannot see or use shares on the SME server from your new XP box?

I typed the above and it came up with a warning box stating that the network location could not be reached. That's particularly interesting as immediately after I logged in via Putty as root. Then I tried again, with the same reponse. It seems that XP cannot see the server wheras the parts of XP such as ping and ftp can.

My problem is that I cannot open the folders on the server as though they were folders on my XP box. I used to be able to do this under 98. I cannot store data onto the server although I can retrieve from. I cannot locate folders using Windows Explorer as I could under 98.

You are not authenticating on server. Make a new user account on the XP box - a different user that you know normally has access to SME server. Try login to XP with that account and try Start->Run->\\192.168.xxxxxx again. Be sure the account you add has exactly same name and password as on SME.

XP new install likes to use the users full name as the login id (if you let it). Then even of you change the name it still uses the original for netlogon. On XP, try Start -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Computer Management -> Local Users -> Users. The 'name' column must show exact logon name as on the SME server. Does it? Is it all lower case?
