You are not authenticating on server. Make a new user account on the XP box - a different user that you know normally has access to SME server. Try login to XP with that account and try Start->Run->\\192.168.xxxxxx again. Be sure the account you add has exactly same name and password as on SME.

XP new install likes to use the users full name as the login id (if you let it). Then even of you change the name it still uses the original for netlogon. On XP, try Start -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Computer Management -> Local Users -> Users. The 'name' column must show exact logon name as on the SME server. Does it? Is it all lower case?

When I set up the XP accounts, I set myself up as admin, which seems to have a capital first letter (don't know whether XP did that by itself).

I've always logged in as admin via SME. Never bothered to set up any i-bays or user accounts. Win 98 always seemed to work happily enough without as does NT4. I'm only getting the problems with XP Pro.

Should I set up an I-Bay?

You should see your SME box.  If not, make sure the SME is set as a browse master & wait a while (up to 2 hours, IME) for the next browser election to happen, then try again.

BTW, setting the SME as the WINS server & browse master is a good idea IMHO.

Ok. I opened My Network Places. Up came the window. In that window were "Add Network Place", "Network Setup Wizard" and "Entire Network" and that's all (aside from two ftp connections to zeus).

I had a look on the XP CD and installed some features that weren't on but still no luck.

I think I've followed everything through as best as possible. I added all the optional features to XP Pro bar Windows Messenger.

The workgroup is Workgroup with a big W just like in XP.

As before, I can FTP, ping and putty but cannot enter using Windows explorer. The directories will not share.

I'm still stumped. And yes... I left the server running for over 2 hours.

I wonder whethe rthe DHCP range might be off?
LDAP directory access is set to private. Is this the problem?
It's set for Workgroup and domain controller.

I've looked through the user guide 5.1 (this is server 5.6) and can see nothing that points in any particular direction.

Is this a soluble problem?

I set SME as windows and workgroup controller. Immediately I lost control over the server. It refused to respond to Putty. It refused to respond to anything other than pings.

Then, when I tried to browse the web, my XP system slowed to a crawl. I tried to disable the ethernet connection and XP crashed, after wish it sent one of its little messages to Microsoft.

It's all very disheartening so far.

I had heard (read)it all before.


I'll say it again (nicely of course) but why don't you just setup your server and workstations for auto everything. It should work correctly first go.
Then when it's working right you can play to your  hearts content to manually change settings IPs etc etc, possibly breaking it along the way, but at least you know it was something you changed that stuffed things up. Undo what you did and you will learn which thing (change) breaks your system.

That's very funny Rhys, had me in fits of laughter.

Setting everything to auto is not a bad idea, it generally works without a problem then. You can manually change settings after that and see what breaks and then undo the changes. Good way to learn

Well, Windows decided it wanted to download more updates. That went well.

Then I switched the server on and fairly shortly after, the whole system went tits up and XP simply froze.

I did a hard reset and tried the suggestion that I set everything on XP to auto. The system went tits up again and froze, necessiting another hard reset.

I set everything back the way it was and the whole system froze again then suddenly unfroze and displayed SME Server in the Workgroup.

I'm happy with the result but not with the process as it seems to defy logic.
