It's extremely unlikely that you have been hit by a virus. Linux systems don't suffer from any of the viruses which plague WIndows systems, and
have very, very few of their own.

File system quotas would produce the symptom you have seen, but I don't think that quotas are used on the e-smith server. The other thing
that can cause the symptoms you have seen are due to limitations of the Microsoft file sharing protocol. My understanding was that Windows only underreported free space on 8GB file systems, but I may be wrong, or you might be using old software version on your client systems. Or it might be something else that I don't know about.
