Can anyone help me add a modem to e-smith, I installed e-smith with a US Robotics 56k Voice Faxmodem attached to Com port 1 but it fails the internet connection test, any ideas?

hello derek,

Can you make sure if the modem is dialing out at all  (by the led's, sound etc . etc) if that itself is not visible/heard then you might try swapping the com port physically.

And I thought it was just me!!  First a confession, I am new to all this. I installed 4.1.2 and planned to test the s/w with an old internal sportster I had kicking around. I installed the modem as COM2 ttyS1. It too failed the Internet Test. I started to look for clues and looked in /var/log/messages and found the server trying to connect every minute or so and failing with a diald mode alarm message.

I killed the lock file and fired up minicom only to find it dialed out ok and started up a ppp session. Data was transmitted but nothing received. I am at a loss. the chat scripts and diald configurations seem ok but the server bangs away every minute and gets nowhere. What trick am I missing?

Yep,

I had the same problem here in Spain and solved in two ways:

     * You need to make a custom template for /etc/e-smith/templates/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp0/25init and 30dialup

In the first one I put L1M1 instead of the L0M0 just the hear the modem call.

In the second you need to replace the order ATDTtelephone number with ATDtelephone number

     * The second way is installing the isp rpm thats around the block.

It's funny because in smoothwall use ATDTtelephone number and works but not in e-smith, maybe a bug?

Once you make this you will hear the modem call and will complete the process, but DNS WONT WORK. I was about to report this as a bug, but I'm waiting untill tomorrow that I will have a different modem to try. It's funny, this same error happened to me with SUSE 7.0. Maybe a common linux error? Something I'm missing?

Hope it helps and we will see what happens with the DNS problem (I posted a question a few days ago about this problem).

  Bye
