SME 5 .6 to 6 etc
« on: March 03, 2004, 02:29:39 AM »
I have a copy of the Technician's handbook for the 6000 MAS. At a guess, I'd say that's for SME 6?

Anyway, I'm looking at it for connectivity to my server. My current connection works but connection seems to hang for a while on connection (between 2 and 10 minutes). This also affects the dialup on my PC. As it all seemed to start when I setup networking, although the networking works, it's probably done wrongly.

Looking at the 6000MAS manual, it mentions certificates. I visited the user accounts panel (users is mentioned but doesn't exist so i presume an error in wording). there's no download button. I'm then directed to reset digital certificates on the remote access panel. that option does not exist.

It seems that I probably need to upgrade to v6. How do I do that (simple instructions please. I'm a Windows guy who's not used to fiddling with networks). Will the upgrade pose a threat to data already stored on the server? That's my cheif worry as although I have a DVD unit to back up data onto, I'm not very sure about the software designed to do so.

What do I do? How do I do it?

Upgrade designed to be simple but few things you may need to aware off.
Backup first.
Boot from CDROM, select option upgrade and it will do it automatically.
Data and configuration is preserved, mailboxes are converted to new folders format.

Where are a couple of snags what you may get (or not).
One is webmail may fail after an upgrade. Bug is known and fix is available. Check bug tracker for updated rpm and instructions.
Another one is printing. If you are "lucky" to hit this bug, fixes also available (search forum)
And lastly some of the contribs you may be using, will need to be upgraded to their latest version to accommodate SME 6 specific navigation and other features.
Revise all the add-ons and contribs that you’ve installed and download their current versions for reinstalling after the upgrade.

Stay with 5.6 if you can - I went to 6 and found the mail from ISP downloading doesn't work for instance. You have a dial up connection from your server? Or a ADSL connection?

Also Backup2ws appears not to work 100% in 6.0. I haven't seen any word of a fix.

Ken, now you did it.
Triple warning scared me too. :-o I will plan to migrate back from SME 6 to SME 5.6 all my servers.

If serious, you may be right. Where is not much advantage in upgrade from 5.6 to 6.0.
I deploy SME 6.0 on all new servers, but the ones running SME 5.6 mostly don’t upgrade.
