You either can delete host name www in the "hostnames and addresses" menu or ignore it since it will work if you type domain.com (without www.) as well.

Thanks for the tip. But when loggin in from anotherpc, and entering conf. of hostnames and addresses, I can't change a thing! And trying logging on to the webpage using my domain name won't work, with or without www.

This sounds like a DNS setup problem. You should be able to setup your DNS records to work with and without the www prefix. Double check how your DNS records are setup with your DNS provider. As a minimum you should have records for the following:

yourdomain.xxx
www.yourdomain.xxx
mail.yourdomain.xxx

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately my ISP reports back that my ADSL connection can't use www. If I try to create an alias in sme, it still adds www. Stuck again.
So I'm still open for suggestions.

Hi Lundsgaard,

I am no expert, but are you sure you are doing things correctly? www has nothing to do with the ADSL connection or neither with your ISP. AFAIK, it is the DNS record. When you bought the domain name (I'm guessing here) you bought a domain of the type "domain.com" or "domain.org" etc. and once you set your DNS account to see your IP, that is all you need. Set your SME Server the right way and that should get you going.

I know that sometimes it may be easier said than done, but in this case I think you are missing some steps. Boris told you the right thing, and in your reply you said that you couldn't change anything, that would sugget me that something is miscofigure with your SME Server setup. Just an example, this very community portal is contribs.org and as you can see it works just fine. Jeff and his crew just decided not to use the www. Review the documentatio and your setup...and if you can't still figure that out get back to us with more detailed info.

At setup configuration you should NOT have 'www' as part of your primary domain name. Check this by doing the following:

1. From the console menue select 'Confirure this Server'

2. Select 'Yes" to proceed

3. on the Primary Domain screen make sure there is no 'www'. You should only have your actual domain name such as 'your-domain.com'

Hi, and thanks for your replies.
During setup I added only my domain name, lundsgaard.adsl.dk. I also tried with my IP address as well. But after reboot when loggin on using my browser it comes out either as www.lundsgaard.adsl.dk or, using IP address, www.212.242.48.203
According to the tech guys at my ISP my connection uses aliases, so even if my IP address is fixed, it's not possible adding www. I can follow both of you, but using f.ex redhat and entering my domain name it works fine.????

I tried to connect to your address and IP but I cannot get through (error: address cannot be retrieved). As I said I am no expert, so your ISP might as well have a special setup for the network it serves, but honestly I have never seen that if you type in just the IP number you get the www automatically in front of it, and to my knowledge it doesn't make much sense.

Have you tried different browsers? you talk about RH and that it works fine with it...so just give a shot at other browsers. That is all I can offer,

Yes, I tried IE, Mozilla and opera. I realy need a way to stop the server addind www. to my domain name. That can be controlled in Redhat. I don't have enough experiens with linux. Else I'm sure using the console there must be a way to remove it from setup. Thank's for your time.

Hi,
That's my router (Cisco 677) answering. I have no problems connecting to the sme server admin. page with my browser. But I can't connect to the web server. Well, I can using the local IP, not the global IP address.

Now that you have told us you are behind a router, you need to start looking at how you set it up. There is a good chance you will find the answer to your problem there.

I think it is two overlaping problems.
One is your browser (misconfigured?) adding www. whenever it can not find server on the domain lundsgaard.adsl.dk from outside. This gives you false idea what it is the server added this unwanted www.
Second (the real) problem is that either your router is not configured to portforward port 80 to internal SME server or ISP blocks this port.

Of course I assume that in this setup SME set up as server-only on the same subnet as routers internal address and not as a server-gateway.

I am not adding anything to what boris and bobk have already said, but now I finally start to understand...you did not say before that you were behind a router and how your SME Server was running, but looking carefully at your router and server setup should help you to pinpoint your problem. At least hope so!
