Connecting to Optus broadband
« on: March 14, 2004, 11:42:12 AM »
Hi, I am very new to bulletin baords, and also to a sytem a friend has installed for me. he is currently in the UK and i am seeking to transfer my Optus connection from standard to broadband.

At present I have both systems operating, so I know I can get through to them, and connections etc are fine.

My problem is I have a server for a hub and internet sharing so that i can connect up 4 PCs around the house. This allows them to interact with each other, and with the internet.

I believe what I have is an Mitel Networks SME Server, version 5.6. I think I need to reconfigure this, & have tried  couple of times, is there someone who can take me through the process of installing broadband through the hub & server. I have three PCs on Win 98 SE, & 2 laptops on XP Pro. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Gavin.  ;-)

I will try.  I am not exactly sure what you are trying to do.  Could you explain what type of internet connection it is and exactly what you want to do.

Working backward from the phone line. we connect into the broadband modem. this connects into a small server via a network card. a second network card conncets the server to a small hub which connects the other home pc's to the network.

The internet connection is broadband. ADSL I understand.

Thanks,

Gavin.

If it's adsl then it's just a matter of logging into the console as admin and select the second option 'configure this system' and set your system to use pppoe, enter user name and password where required and reboot when asked. As long as you have your internal and external cards arranged properly you should be up and running in no time. Ask away if there is anything that you are unsure about.

DOne this but still can't connect. Even tried swapping the network cards and both seem to work ok, so i doubt that's the problem. have changed the local ip address to 10.1.1.5

when i test Mitel on the server console to see if it can connect to he net it comes back negative.

Does your ADSL connect with a modem or a bridge?  If it is a bridge, you might have a DHCP address provided to your server, or you might have been assigned an IP in which case you need to enter the IP info into the configuration.  What is the old server?  If windows, does it have any IP settings in the Network adapter that connects to the ADSL?  Just some thoughts.

Sorry I have no idea what a bridge is in this context.
The old server is in fact the same one. I have been sucessfully using Mitel for some time with no problems. though i conncected through a standard modem within that server.

So I have added a new network card, and new ADSL Modem.

I don't run windows on this server.

I had difficulty connecting to Optus Cable until they registered the modem I was using onto their system. Unusually for a Telco, Optus Tech support is quite switched on and very helpful - unless I got one of the good guys .... : )

I hope this helps ....
