Topic: Problems in restoring when Migrating to a new Machine

We are using SME Server 6.0 as our internet gateway and proxy. It is configured on a P4 system. It is working fine. I have modified squid.conf file directly as I found it easier rather than changing templates and then expanding. My ignorance.

But now we need to transfer it on another machine Xeon Dual Processor, with RAID1 (two HDDs). I took the backup of the old machine using manager-server. It is about 36Mb size. On new machine (Xeon dual processor server with RAID1, running SMP) installed SME server 6.0 and tried to restore from the backup. All files upto /etc/samba/smbpasswd are copied but does not show "Restore Complete" message. I waited for 3 hours; it did not show "Restore Complete" Message. I rebooted the new server.
On rebooting server shows a message saying that the restoring process was not completed and so the system will not work properly. It also suggests to consult the user guide but there is nothing in the user guide about this problem.

I have checked, all the restored files are there on the new server. I tried many times (with smeserver 6.0.1 also) to restore on newly installed SME serve but the result was the same.

Please help to fix this problem. I am not able to understand why this problem is occurring.

Sounds like you have used the backup to desktop function (not the add on backup to workstation contrib).

If that is correct then you will NOT be able to restote that file using the restore from desktop function. There are limitations to do with tar, smb and even the size of files that certain browsers can handle when doing restores.

Your main problem is that you are trying to restore from a backuo file that is larger than 2Gb, and this has nothing to do with ext2 or ext3 etc.

There are many posts re this, search on backup or backup2ws.

You should have used the backup2ws contrib and split the backup file into less than 2Gb size chunks, then the restore would work OK.

Hi,

I would suggest that you use the rsync protocol.

Set up your new machine and follow this howto:

Just add /var/lib/mysql/ if you have any working databases, and change the network hardware card.

I've used it on several machines (both 5.6 and 6.0) with great success..

Oops sorry, I misread the file size as 36Gb. In your case (36Mb) your backup to desktop and restore SHOULD work OK. Browser file size problems would not be an issue either.

It should only take a few minutes.
I did see some problems with Internet Explorer v5.5 SP2 not correctly restoring files, you could try a Netscape product (v6 or better) as that did not seem to have any problems.

When you do the restore try also logging on to server manager as
http://servername/server-manager
rather than the usual domain style URL, there was an issue along these lines with earlier versions/combinations.

You will have problems if the restore does not complete correctly.

Try a different browser & server manager login, or try the rsync alternatove suggested by another poster
