Installing SME - Where to start...
« on: July 21, 2004, 12:05:04 AM »
Ok, treat me like a beginner, (which I almost am). I am fairly ok with computing, but have only a little experience with SME, and in I used one of the previous versions 'as was' and never changed it.

I am now wanting to do it properly, so assuming I download the 6.0.1 iso. and install it, what shoudl be my next move?

Are there updates, if so how do I get these?
How do I go about getting anti-virus / anti-spam software installed?
My users want functionality like Microsoft Outlook and Exchange server offers to them, (shared contacts, calender) I believe SME contains mail, but how do I add these extra features? If someone can describe in basic terms at least how to do one of these things then maybe I can use the same method to figure out the rest.

Many many thanks,

Phil

i would recommend you reading some HowTos, you can get them in the contribs section. Have a look there for "yum" as an update system that works nicely, "clam av" as an GPL antivirus solution and or assp/spamassasin for some more spam protection.

Using these HowTos yum/clam av and other useful things (depends from your point of view) are installed in no time.

Outlook functionality

For outlook functionality you could have a look at Kronolith. It’s web based and ties in with IMP.  Have a look at http://www.horde.org/kronolith/.
Not sure if there's an rpm to install but a search of the forums should give some clues on how to install.

Otherwise you could look at open exchange, which does give almost full MS exchange functionality but as far as I'm aware doesn't run on SME (or nobody has tried it yet).

open exchange (SUSE Openexchange Server) is a standalone product that comes with SUSE ent server and requires dedicated server. It will format drive during installation.

Doh! Thanks for pointing that out Boris. A friend told me about it but I haven't looked at it as I don't really need that sort of functionality (SME serves me & my family only) but I've just browsed around the forums as I'm bored at work and seen the following thread about Scalix.

Don't know how far some of the others have got with this but it looks interesting. May even have a go myself so that my mum can enter family birthdays in a calendar to remind me.
