Topic: installation hell

I'm a newcomer to the world of e-smith and Linux.  I used Unix many moons ago but most recent applications were windows based. On with the story...  I have a situation where there is a NT network with an e-smith dedicated e-mail server.  The machine running the e-smith has died and I'm trying to build a new one.  I have a copy of e-smith 3.0, which is what they were running prior to the burn-out.   The install completes and then during the reboot it hangs on:
checking root filesystem
/dev/hda6 was not clearly unmounted
check forced
It goes into a loop with the check.  
each loop ends with the messages:
INIT: id 1 (1 through 6) respawning too fast:disabled for 5 minutes.
and then runs the sequence again.

I've tried downloading a new image.  I've used ftp and http through my IE5.  I end up with a file ~60MB instead of 335MB.  The instructions that I found on rsync sounds like you need to have a Linux machine up and going.

Any suggestions?  Just point me in the right direction and I'll do okay.

You might try looking for the magazine "Linux Format" LXF16-july2001. It has E-smith included on its cover disk. Although you have to patch it a bit (there instructions are on the home page of this site).

If you like i can make an image file in *any* format that suits you best. After that..eighter rar or zip them in 15MB sizes (dunno what connection you have but..).

I have 'found' a copy of 4.1.2!  I'll be working on that install later this week.  Hope all to go well.  I appreciate your advice Ted - I was starting the search for a copy of the LinuxFormat magazine today - and now will not HAVE to have it.  And Peter, thank you for the generous offer to copy and send it in 'bites' for me.  I appreciate the help and will, probably, be soliciting advice again.
