5.5 Server and Gateway Security Question
« on: March 30, 2004, 06:55:28 AM »
I've just installed SME 5.5 as a Server And Gateway and will be using it only for mail.

The server sits outside the company firewall (the firewall started 'aging' incoming e-mail before passing it on to the SME box ... that had to change.)

How secure will the SME box be in that configuration?  What else do I need to do, if anything?

[I apologize in advance for taking the easy way out and asking before digging too deep in the forums ... but I've been here 16 hours today -- 12 on Sunday, 12 on Saturday -- and just want to get home. (I know, boo hoo, poor me.  :-) )

Why instal an unsupported OS that is 2 versions old ? There are bound to be many security issues with that box. I would upgrade immediately to at least v6.0.

5.5 Server and Gateway Security Question
« Reply #2 on: March 30, 2004, 05:41:31 PM »
Well, the box started out as 5.6.  I spent several hours Sunday trying to Restore from Desktop only to have it fail repeatedly.

A visit to the forums here revealed that the Restore from Desktop feature didn't always work in 5.6 and that an earlier version should be installed, restored to, and then upgraded. (I tried the other fixes suggested here as well.)

I'm comfortable installing ASSP and the other tools to 5.5/6.

Having said that, I do have a non-mission critical box sitting here in the floor that I could test a 6 upgrade on ... WHICH brings us to this question:

If I do a default install of 6.x on a box, as Server and Gateway, will it be secure enough or will I need to do some additional tweaking?  What tweaking would I need to do?

Thanks,

DHW
