Not sure this reply will do you any good, but I'll list it just as well..

Throughout the years I've had this error a few times.. Usually it's because the install. never finished, or didn't write the MBR like it should..
To get around it, I've found two ways so far;
1)
Try switching your HD to another set of IDE cables.. say change from primary -> secondary controller and/or change Master/Slave settings..
2)
Throw in another *nix install CD, and repartition the Harddisk. I usually just erase it, and *make* sure it's completely erased before I continue.. For some odd reason, it seems sometimes distributions 'locks' themselves and doesn't overwrite the MBR like they should.. This is not logical, but I think I've received this error some 10+ times on 5+ different comps.. Can't all be coincidence..
