Connecting XP Pro to SME Server

OK. I feel like a complete moron. I've tried and tried to get XP Pro to talk to SME 5.6. Thus far, I can get some of it to work but not all.

I see the directories on the server via My Network Places but they're all FTP folders. I try mapping the network drive and all that comes up is FTP. I'm positive that there's a way to access the server directories as folders. I did this under Windows 98. I just don't see quite what the problem is with XP.

OK. SME is set as domain controller. Everything is set to auto on XP. XP has netbios over tcp/ip disabled. It has all but tcp/ip disabled in the lan connection.

What have I missed?

A blow-by blow description of how to eliminate the current network connection and how to set it up correctly would be appreciated. I'm positive the problem is on the XP end.

I found the entry
REGEDIT4HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\netlogon\parameters]"RequireSignOrSeal"=dword:00000000

And installed it. No joy though.

Perhaps I should rephrase the problem?

I open workgroup on the XP box and see nothing. Not another computer - not my desktop nor the server. I suspect this is the key. I have ftp folders linked to the directories on the server but I'm stumped as to how I can do this when I can't even see a computer present. XP is so different from NT4 and Windows 98!

I run two xp machines off sme 6.0
i had a similar problem. I went into server manager and changed the workgroup name to the same as the pcs.. ie mshome or whatever you want to call it.

XP should automatically detect the server then in the workgroup.

Also helps if the server is set to dchp ON

Reboot Pcs and it should recognise it and you can double click on the server icon and get access to the folders

Hope this helps

Try this on your XP machine:

Enable: "Client for Microsoft Networks"
Enable: "NetBIOS over TCP/IP"

Ah. So simple.

It even worked without a reboot. Now I can access my files for the first time in 6 months.
