Topic: Migrating, simple solution?

I know there is a simple solution as I wish to migrate 40+ users and their email to a fresh install of 6.0.1 - but my searches have just not found it.  This particular box has been upgraded to many times and a fresh install would be best, I am sure.
Any and all help and or links to previous discussions of the same, is greatly appreciated.....

To further explain - just a restore won't work.  Going from single drive to mirrored drives.  Been there done that - doesn't work.  I need the folks email and passwords without dragging all the old setups.  Need fresh.

I have a 5.5 that I need to migrate but the profile thing is proving a bit of a bugger. The gist of it is the need to regenerate a secrets file or copy the secrets file if the server is keeping the same name and may be other things that the secrets key uses to generate itself.

Maybe there are other options that haven't been addressed.  The reason for the fresh install is driven by the fact that VPN will not work on this box.  Have noticed several things that are odd regarding this server and a fresh install would make these things go away.  Another group of Admins started this network and loaded and customized e-smith 4.2 or 4.3 as the original setup.  I think you can see where I am going with the desire to have things fresh.  I can move their mail account files one at a time, but will that work? When I migrated from 5.6 to 6.03b I had lost all the passwords and had to re-enter them all.  Never did figure out why, but had to do it so I did. (BTW - running 6.0 final)  I don't need to mirror the drive, but it is available, hdb is just sitting there - ordered the server with the drives installed.

OK, picking apart your post I will deduce a couple of things that make the situation easier to address.

You have a server that has been migrated from 4.3 to 5.6 to 6.0b3 and it is currently running 6.0b3.

Some stuff is broken?

Is this with or without the patches for 6.0b3? (which in effect bring it up to 6.0)

Is it running as a PDC? i.e. a domain controller? do your users lodin to a domain run by the e-smith server?

How much disk space are you using? df -k will help with this one.

why not moving to 6.0.1? It has a number of security patches in it.

Thats funny, I posted a reply and it didn't show up.
Looking at your thoughts Peter I turned off domain control, and turned it back on and the VPN started working fine, at least for one day.  Went back to it the next day and prior symptoms were back.
Answering your questions - we had a fully patched 6.03b - and ARE running 6.0 final.  Plenty of disk space, less than 10% used.
Am testing 6.01 on my box now prior to moving it to the office production machine.  Need to be cautions here, better safe than sorry.

The problem I have found is trying to migrate the domain part of server. Samba uses a fair number of files and that coupled with the need to copy or replicate the computer accounts that are also generated gave me a big headache. I was working on a migration how-to but it started to take up to much time. My problem is that although the server that is running 5.5 has roaming profiles turned off there was a bug that meant that this was ignored. Hence if I just plop in a new 6.0.1server it will mean rebuilding 10 odd client PC's as the profies will have all disapeared. I am still trying to find a tool or method that will preserver the profiles or make them local to the client PC's but I dont know enough about profiles at the moment to do that. Mind your it could be a way of getting this particular bunch to start afresh with their desktops....

There was a thread that I was involved in regarding this subject and there has also mean mention of someone having a beta version of samba with active directory to run with 6.0
