What I would really like is a web based root system. That is I would like to have web based text editor and ability to run command line stuff.

My problem is that I often still have to edit config files, I wish they were all in http interface. For example the squid enabling and disable transparent proxy. How about SSL ports for squid.

I am not a "Linux" guy so this is a pain from my perspective. Thus http interface for editing text files and command line would be god send.

I was just thinking that along with this text editor it would be nice to have a database of changed items. That is store a log of what the root user has changed, that can be printed.

For example if root changes the squid transparent proxy then log the changes such that the administrator can print out a change log of what has been changed from the default configuration of the server. This would be great when doing updates or clean installs.

I wonder if it would be possible to have on the contribs site a copy of all conf files and then do a diff, or maybe a CVS system for the server it's self.
