A. Write in proper English or French.

B. Read the documentation.

C. Register & login as a proper user.

Well,
you don't need smtp.mydomain.nl
you can just get away with mail.mydomain.nl or
and
you have to use the same userID which u have created using server manager

Use the Server Manager to create the user "arno" the email address arno@mydomain.nl (and two aliases) will be created automatically by the server as part of the create new user process.

If you intend to host you email server on your SME machine, yes. You can have your web site hosted remotely using the same domain name but you will need to setup your DNS properly with whoever is handling DNS service for you.

Okay let me explane my network situation:

i have cable, 1 e-tech router.
a windows w2k server for active Directory and DCHP.
a Linux sme 6.0 svr, running as websvr and (when its working) mail server.

my sme svr uses as gateway the router, and as dns a dns adres from my isp.

i dont get the DNS thing u said to me, i need to change the dns adres on my sme svr?
and the dns will be the dns from my internet mail provider?

thnx in advance

If we consider bobk's message.......
it seems we need 2 IP addresses one for the website hosting server(www.mydomain.com) and the other for e-mail server (mail.mydomain.com)
It seems possible if the DNS service or ISP takes care of it

I was talking about the 2 IP Adresses when the mail server and website server are on two remote locations.
In ur case both are on the same SME server. So one IP address is enough in the DNS (used by ur ISP) for you.
Only thing is router has to be configured properly to forward port 25 to ur external NIC of SME Server.
Forget about ur ISP's mail sever.......

arno,

You are getting me confused.

In your first post you said, "i have my own domain on the net, the webby is located somewere else" which implies that your web site is NOT hosted on your SME machine.

In you last post you said, "a Linux sme 6.0 svr, running as websvr and (when its working) mail server" which implies that your web server is IS hosted on your SME machine.

You cannot have it both ways using the same domain name. So which is it really?

The DNS service I mentioned has nothing to do with your SME machine but is the DNS service provider that is assigned to publish DNS information for your domain name.

DNS: Publication of DNS Address Records - The publication of DNS address information allows other DNS servers to look up your domain information. Your ISP or DNS service provider must publish DNS address records associating the name of your web server ("www.domain.xxx"), FTP server ("ftp.domain.xxx") and e-mail server ("mail.domain.xxx") with the IP address of your server.

DNS: Publication of DNS Mail (MX) Records - The publication of DNS mail (MX) records is the method used to inform Domain Name Services worldwide that all e-mail to your domain ("yourdomain.xxx") should be delivered to your e-mail server ("mail.yourdomain.xxx").

If you do not know or understand what I am talking about then you need to ask whoever you purchased your domain name from to tell you who is providing DNS service for your domain name.

You also need to find out from your Cable provider if you have a fixed or dynamic IP address.

Once you have answers to these questions go read the SME Manual http://no.longer.valid/phpwiki/index.php/SME%20Server%20User%20Manual particularly Chapter 3.

After you get a little understanding of the very basics and can accurately describe your network set-up and DNS records, come back here and someone will be able to give you some real help.

I have just created a standalone server on an intel  box

I have given it a static IP WITHIN MY LAN
and I WILL be using natting/port forwarding from my firewall/router
So the chain of connection looks like this:-
send a mail to mymailaddress@myhost.com  --->       dynamic.dns.supplier --->                 my_firewall/router.ip

What else should I do
Which ports do I need to open?
And to whom?
Should I just use external SMTP server and add it to the Server Admin page (see quote)
Quote
Delegate mail servers
....However, if for some reason you wish to delegate e-mail processing to another system, specify the IP address of the delegate system here
.

I wanted to just have it "There " waiting for mail, not to have to play around too much.

Please can you help me get my head around this ,
MY BRAIN HURTS!
