re-install disk error with 6.01
« on: April 06, 2004, 03:08:11 PM »
Hi all.  Okay, think I have located an interesting problem.  I tried using the servermanager to "create reinstallation disk" so I wouldn't have to reconfigure the network settings on a new install.  however, when booting from the installation floppy and using the cd, I get an error when reading the cd that the version of the software doesn't match. and the installation exits.  this occurs immediately after stage 2 of the installation begins where it reads from the cd.  I have a look at the ks.cfg file on the floppy and it is for sme version 5.0  I tried editing the ks.cfg file to match the version reported by the cd but no joy.  not sure how it checks for a version match and what I could do to correct it.  would welcome suggestions

Please report this in the bug tracker.  It looks like a legit bug issue to me so far.

Could somebody with this problem take a look at Bug 67 as it sounds very similar to the problem I had with PXE install. Of course it may not be related.

This has the same root cause as Bug 67, so I added a BugNote.

"This error also applies to the re-installation floppy.
The initrd.img written to the floppy also has an old timestamp
initrd.img .buildstamp 200306110956

This causes the problems reported here: http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=21751.0"

The bug is in the Bug Tracker

HI,

This is the issue I've been dealing with.
Only, it is worse for me because this bug
does not allow my system to boot. I get
a kernel panic error and everything freezes.

See my post, Create reinstallation disk bug
prevents boot from floppy/cd.

Try downloading the latest version
of syslinux at http://syslinux.com
If you have a win system use the windows
version.

Once you have the files extracted,

move them to the c:\syslinux directory,

stick the disk in the drive,

open a prompt and cd c:\syslinux

then issue the command syslinux a:

Once this is completed, try the
reinstall again and post here to
inform us what happens.

I will also post something to the bugbucket

Hope this helps,

Scott

It's amazing what you find when your
not looking for it. I was on the
PcChips website looking for a bios
upgrade and this is what I found:)

I tried it and the sucker booted from
the cd. You might what to try it and
see if this is the same issue with
your system.

44. Why does it crash when I try to install Red Hat Linux?
Many people have tried to install Red Hat Linux 7.2 and found that the installer crashes with a kernel panic. This can be resolved by disabling ACPI/APM in the BIOS prior to installing Red Hat. This can be re-enabled after installation if required. Also, ensure that the CD drive that you are installing from is jumpered to either "master" or "slave", and not "cable select".

Some people who find that Red Hat gets confused when using the onboard VGA (shared memory). The fix is to use the following command "boot: linux mem=64m" when booting from the first CD.

When installing XFree86, it may pay for you to use the command "Xconfigurator --noddcprobe" to prevent crashing. Some people find the alternative VGA driver from http://www.webit.at/~twinny/linuxsis630.shtml better than the default.

I personally have had no such problems with crashes or with X when installing Linux on my machine. This is probably due to the fact that I use Debian GNU/Linux!
