Using ISP's SMTP-server
« on: April 14, 2004, 08:13:05 PM »
Hi
My ISP has now stopped all outgoing traffic on port 25. That ofcourse means, that my SME server can not send e-mails anymore (e.g. from web-mail or PHP scripts).

I am wondering if it is possible to configure it to use my ISP's SMTP-server when sending e-mails? So that the SME-server's SMTP-server will send mails via my ISP's SMTP-server?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Thomas

Hello

I use Cox for an isp and they have closed port 25 but
let you use their smtp server seems weird anyway

you can check your isp to see if they let you use their smtp server then it is simple to setup your sme box just go to the email page in server-manager and in the box about half way down the page enter your isp's smtp server address ie:

smtp.myisp.com

and that is it no changing port numbers or anything else

hope this helps

I'm not in front of any SME server right now, but I know the option is there.  Look in the server manager panel under email settings.  You just supply your isp's smtp server name.  With all of the anti-spam efforts, other isp's would be blocking your isp's mail if they don't take measures to block your using a mail server on their network.

I am using SME Server 5.1.2. Is that why I don't see this setting?

Best regards,

Thomas,

(0) Please TRY to use search :-(
...this has been answered at least 3 times this week.

(1) go to the SME admin panel...
Configuration / E-Mail / Delegate Mail-Servers
2nd choice text says:
------------------------------------------------------
The server can deliver outgoing messages directly to their destination (recommended in most cases) or can deliver them via your Internet provider's SMTP server (recommended if you have an unreliable Internet connection or are using a residential Internet service). If using your Internet provider's SMTP server, specify its hostname or IP address below. Otherwise leave this field blank.
Address of Internet provider's mail server
....
--------------------------------------------------
FILL IN YOUR PROVIDERS SMTP HERE

Voila :pint:

And maybe you shouldn't be asking your question in the experienced users forum.

Versions earlier than 5.6 deprecated

And unless your SME 5.1.2 box is behind a good firewall, it WILL be hacked and r00ted.  5.6 with all updates is the earliest version that's reasonably secure.
