Hello,
I am in need of some help.
I have been testing esmith for about 3 months now and I have not been unable to figure out all the answers to my questions.

I am hoping that I could use emith server to start a small internet services for about 20 users.

I am needing help with setting up all the service like an ISP would offer.

Would some one be kind enoff to  help me out ?
 or
Tell me if esmith is capible fo doing the same things that am Isp offers. Offer me some instruction or consult with me over the phone. anything would be much appreciative.

I have a cable modem connection.
The server is a pentium 90mhz with 48mb ram, 10 gb hard drive.
I have a external 56k us robotics modem I would like to use for the dail-in and one domain that is register.

I Have a lot of questions.
Here is a short list that I would like to setup.

1)dail-in to the server.

2)limit the time the person can connect or to keep track of it with some kind of report.

3)some kind of billing that works with question 1,2,4,5,6.

4)limit the bandwidth the person uses.

5)limit the space that they would use on the server

6)limit the email size.

7)virtual domain and email for that domain.

I am limited by a small bugdet so any cheap or free would be great.

I need help in clarifing setting up DNS and email for the virtual domains. Also dyndns.org settings

I understand how to setup an virual domain and Ibays but I just need a little more clarification.

Please help.
email me or call me

Thanks in advance.

This will tell you how to set up your website etc but a lot of the other questions like the billing software and allowing dial up would be things you would have to set up custom and you most likely will not get answers to in this fourm. Also don't you think you might want to get a little more robust machine if this is going to be a production server you plan to make money off of?  Anyway you can find out how to set up a website and virtual domains. If you have any questions on whatg I supplied below let me know.

First off I do not use my ISP’s DNS for anything it just causes problems.. I leave my server free of DNS info it does it’s own DNS lookups. ISP’s fiddle with their DNS servers too darn much.

Anyway I purchase my domain names from 000domains.com, after that I go to www.zoneedit.com to set up my free DNS account to host my domain name.. I add the name to my DNS account and point the names to my static IP 4 ways : www.mydomain.com, mail.mydomain.com, mydomain.com and ftp.mydomain.com . Then I go back to 000domains.com and use the DNS servers that zoneedit gives you as the primary and secondary DNS servers for your domain name.

After that I make a new user group on my e-smith server to hold the accounts for the users that need to access the new domain. Then I make a new Ibay and give access to the new Ibay to that new group. Then I make whatever new users I need to make for e-mail purposes etc.

Then I add my domain to the virtual domain area and point it to the new Ibay I made and that is it..

So far the only problem I have had is that using anything other then www.mydomain.com will point to the primary website but www.mydomain.com points to the Ibay I have set up! I don’t know why that happens and it does not always happen.

But I hope this is of some help.. Oh and 000domains.com is cool cause they are fast and you control your account through their web interface and never have to deal with the company unless you have a problem. And zoneedit is the same all web administer and you can host 5 domains for free plus set up web and e-mail forwarding, web parking etc.

Or just go to register.com (you don't need zoneedit)

Register.com does not dynamic DNS when you make domain names there so what do you do for Dynamic DNS if you don't use a service like Zoneedit? All register.com does is allow you to register a name.

My domain is registered with register.com
but I am confused about how to set the correct settings.
to make it more confusing that my cable modem uses DHCP.
The dynamic setting under esmith dyndns.org is not working.
I setup my accout name and password but it will not auto update the dynamic address to www.dyndns.org.
What am I doing wrong! I am soooo fustrated with this.

At www.register.com it wants an static IP address for the domain.
what ip address do I set there
What Dns address do I set if I am using www.dyndns.org
What mail setting would I use.
the domain name is acomcomputers.net
the domain address under Dyndns.org is www.acomcomputers.dyndns.org

I am not sure what to set for the rest.
Dns, Cname, Mx,

I am not to happy with register.com it take 24-72 hr for any changes to take effect.

Does anyone know of a better place to reigster and to be able to configure dynamic ip and to point to subdirectory at a better price ?

thanks

I have never used that service but I used to use one called dynaip and what you had to do with them is have them when you got your account you told them your domain name and they put it on their servers and gave you the Primary and Secondary DNS server info to use with your doman name register company. Also it looks like you have a problem. If you signed up with Dyndns.org and they gave you the name www.acomcomputers.dyndns.org then you are not really using the domain name you signed up on register.com.. You need to see if Dyndns lets you use the domain name you have registered first. And have them put it on their DNS servers.

But from looking at their site if you use their free service you can not use your own domain name you have to use an exstention of theirs. And that is not what you want.   Also after reading their how-to it says you have to update your IP yourself or use one of the contrib clients that they have for download.

Does not sound good to me. :(

I have some idea to suggest. I'm using dns2go rpm in e-smith ver. 4.1.2. It make form deerfield.com form free. you can go  www.dns2go.com  web site download the newest version rpm. The web site also have user domain name apply for free.
It may help someone. Goodluck

Thanks, it works.

All I did was:
1. Register a free sub domain from dns2go. (ex. anything.d2g.com)
2. Create a CNAME record at register.com and point it to sub domain above.
