how to install SME on a SCSI disk?
« on: April 20, 2004, 08:30:09 AM »
Hi all.

This is a simple question: how can we install SME on a SCSI disk? I have seen no information about this matter.
I have tried to install 5.6, 6.0 and 6.0.1 on SCSI drive with no success (Adaptec 2930 controller + 18GB Maxtor UW320). The message is alway the same: "No hard drives have been found. You have to install the drivers manually. Do you want to select the drivers...?" Next screen takes you to the language selection, Licence agreement and that's it.
I can see the driver for the controller (aic97xx.o) is on my old 5.6 server (/lib/modules/...), so I suppose it must be somewhere on the installation CD. I try to "accept dd" and indeed the setup asks if I have a drivers disk. I introduce "drvblock.img", guessing the driver is there, but no success. I introduce a floppy with adaptecs driver for RedHat 7.3 and the same again: the system does not insert the module, neither finds any disk.
Where is SME driver to activate the SCSI disk? And what do I have to do so it works? I had a look at the Forum and Documentation, but find nothing. I thought SME, which recommends SCSI drives for the installation of the Server, would be prepared to recognize a SCSI drive instantly, as my SuSE did (/dev/sda) at home, but no way. I am sure there are quite a lot of people working with SME and SCSI drives, since I have seen it in the past on the Forums. Could any of you with experience write some basic instructions on how to work this problem out?
Thanks a lot.
Miguel

Which 2930 adapter is it?  Some appear to be only designed for SCSI CDs etc., and may not be bootable.  What is the SCSI ID of your hard disk - must be 0 for the boot disk.  Is the cable properly terminated?  Need a little more info before I can help any more.

Sorry, Barry, I did not write it correctly: Adaptec 29320-R. SCSI ID is 0 indeed. Cables are fine since I have installed witout any problem SuSE 9.0 and Windows2003 Server to check. Adaptec controller seems to be working fine as well.
My idea is that E-Smith simply does not insert the driver, do not know why, and does not find the drives.
Thanks

SME support for Adaptec U320

Miguel,
Unfortunately RH7.3 and subsequently SME6.0 didn't include support for this family of SCSI adapters on their boot disk. After a great deal of mucking around I was able to modify the SME6.0 boot disk to include support for this card. You can grab a copy of the modified boot.img  here. The link is at the bottom of the page. Just boot of the newly created floppy and follow the prompts. Let me know how it goes.
