Can't get 6.0.1 to install at all
« on: April 21, 2004, 10:24:48 PM »
New to Linux, and stuck at first post :-(

Downloaded current 6.0.1 iso. Burnt it to a CD. target machine (older P1 166) won't boot from CD, so I followed instructions to make a boot floppy.

Now:

1. On booting from floppy, complains there's no ks.cfg on the floppy. I OK that.
2. Then it loads AIC SCSI driver
3. Then complains about an error opening kickstart file /tmp/ks.cfg. I OK that too.
4. Then it looks at CD and starts running anaconda
5. Then it fails with more errors, inc "IOError: no such file of directory /tmp/ks.cfg", unmounts the fs and shuts down.

This is a system with Win98 running happily. I was expecting the install to trash all that.

What am I doing wrong?

wibbly,

Trying copying from the cd in the images directory, the ks_stub.cfg to you boot floopy.  You may need to rename this file to ks.cfg, I can't remember right off.

Wibbly,

Can you boot this system with a different bootable CD-ROM?  If your system meets the min requirements for SME 6.0, it most likely should be able to boot from CD.  I have installed many SME server since 4.1.2 and have never run into a CD boot problem that was related to SME/E-smith....they where all related to BIOS settings....newer Dells require you hit F12 during Bios load in order to boot from floppy or CD...

hope that helps,

ryan

Doing that and renaming as you suggest seems to be doing the trick. Thanks.

May well be a BIOS issue, but see above. I seem to be making progress anyway...

creating e-smith 6.0 cd that works

possibly need to get back to basics here.
After you download the esmith iso image, be sure that when you burn your iso image to cd that you use record cd from cd image (or similar, sometime hard to find option in burning software) not just burn the iso image to cd. Completed cd should have several files on it not just the e-smith.iso file. Then it should boot.

Try Smart Boot Manager

Sounds as though there may be other factors involved ... but in other situations where you can't boot from CD-ROM natively, Smart Boot Manager can:

I had the same problem when trying to load sme 6 onto an old machine.

I found that if you use a newer cd rom preferably 52x then your boot probs may be cured.

Many of these old machines have old cd roms. I also reduced the burn speed when I burnt the original ISO image.

Good Luck

Hi wibbly,

I had a similar problem installing SME v6.0.1 on an old P166 Mhz
When booting from CD I got error like "Cannot boot from CD..."

I changed the CD-ROM drive for a new DVD-ROM drive (I just switched them with a more recnt computer) and everything worked perfectly! After installing, I switched back the drives.

good luck

Just ran into this exact situation with an old Acer P200 test server that had been running 5.5 ... copying ks_stub.cfg and renaming to ks.cfg did the trick and 6.0.01 is installing even now.  (No, I did NOT upgrade directly from 5.5; once bitten, twice shy!)

boot to install os
« Reply #10 on: May 03, 2004, 11:55:43 AM »
OS install CDs I always burn at low speed, like 2x. The boot and install a lot more reliable. If you install from a same CD-ROM where you burnt the CD the burning speed almost always does not matter. If you burnt your OS install CD at higher speed like 32x and try to boot and install from an old CD-ROM, like 24x in an old machine, try to update your CD-ROM firmware, and your mainboard BIOS. In most cases it will help. If not, than burn a new CD at low speed.

I copy  the ks_stub.cfg to my boot floopy and to rename this file to ks.cfg,
that's all.
