Forwarding secure email to an internal server
« on: April 22, 2004, 06:46:15 AM »
I have a client who has two SME Server boxes (v5.6), with mail and web served from the server-only box behind the server-gateway machine. This has been working well for over two years.

I've now installed Damien Curtain's secure email contrib on the mail server, and, as expected, wasn't able to connect from the outside as the gateway box would have the appropriate ports diabled. I therefore installed Darrell May's portforwarding contrib and set it up to forward ports 465 and 993 to the internal box. However, I still can't talk to it (I also added the UDP ports in case they were required, but this made no difference).

Have I got the wrong end of the stick, or are other ports also required to be opened?

Thanks,
Des Dougan

I've tried various combinations of port forwarding and port opening functions; however, in each case, no matter what I do, I am unable to connect to the internal server.

I've also tried installing the secure email contrib on the external box, and then enabling port forwrding. Again, I can't talk to the internal box on the two specific ports (465 and 993).

Has anyone had any success with running a server-only system in this way? It must be feasible to do this, so I assume I'm making an error somewhere along the way.

Thanks,

My suggestion on this is to check the messages log of both machines at the time you try the connection between them, maybe the firewalls have something to say wich could be one step forwared. Pheraps the masq-mgr contrib could help? http://no.longer.valid/mylinks/singlelink.php?cid=123&lid=372. Sorry, i don't have anything better.
