« on: April 26, 2004, 01:47:13 PM »
I am trying to access my SME mailbox via the internet. I have set the email for public (internet) access but cant access it! I get this message from Outlook Express.......

Task 'mail.mydomain.com - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was interrupted.  If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Webmail works fine. What am I doing wrong?
Router has ports 25 & 110 allowed

Hi stocky,

take a look at these posts for email size limit

http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=20748.msg81917#msg81917

For the other issue, if you are sure you setup the email server correctly (SME side), then take a look at your Outlook setup. I wouldn't be surprised if that is the cause of the error.

Why don't you just make do with webmail when you're off-site ? Its the easiest approach by far even if we disregard the security issues.
You know, since remote Pop and Imap are deactivated by default in 6.01 you'd have to read howto's and install RPM's yourself to gain access that way.
. . But if you insist, here's the link: http://www.pagefault.org/howto/securemail.shtml

Have fun !

ISP?

You know that https and smtp are on different ports. Just because you can get to one and not the other isn't a suprise. Is it possible that your ISP is blocking SMTP to your server? A lot of ISP's are blocking SMTP because of mail problems. Don't forget that if you open your email server to the world you can be a target for Spammers to relay mail through. Don't be surprised if you start getting return emails from people you've never sent mail to.

Allowing Internet access to your mailserver ... ARRRRGH!

Use PPtP to establish a VPN connection to your server, then you'll be inside and can use the POP3 and SMTP just as you like.

wyron,

How do you istall these RPM's?  I'm a real novice with Linux...just learning.  I can download them using my Win XP laptop, but then how can I install them on my server?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

These 2 HowTos will get you started.

How to download and install a RPM

Installing rpms - using the browser based server manager

Also read this HowTo on using PuTTy.

Yes in the Remote Access panel of Server-Manager. But you should look at using PuTTy instaed as it is very much more secure

Bobk,

I wanted to thank you for all your help.  The monitor on my server went bad, so that's why I wanted to use telnet.  I used putty and logged in as root.  From there I used Midnight Commander to install all the rpm's.

Thanks again so much!  Next time you're in Florida, I owe you a beer :pint:
