modems--help!

I have now used two external modems, one an ActionTech another a 3Com/USrobotics speedster, Also an internal pci 3Com, 2 ISA modems. Nothing has worked I have tried two different e-smith servers neither worked.   The  the external dial out but never  get a carried detect. I am sure the problem is too obvious  for me to see. TIA  :-)

I hope you are using the correct dialout number :-)

If you stop diald (use "killall diald") then you can use minicom to
attempt to dial out. Just "ATDT795783457" and see if you get a connect.
Then look at the e-smith dial string and see if you can determine
what is different and what makes a difference.

Thanks Charlie, I finally solved it. It turn out to be a comedy of errors. The original access number had a transposed number. Then once it dialed it would get a connection and then do an immediate disconnect. We then change ISPs. The second Isp logged on immediately. The system is now running. On confusing thing is the absence of a template to input primary and secondary DNS numbers. I have a feeling the first ISP didn't work because they weren't assigned automatically.

Even if they were assigned automatically they won't get used. There is a template for setting primary and secondary DNS numbers (via the web GUI under name and domain settings) but
the system will work without them, since the server is running its own name daemon - setting primary and secondary DNS servers
might make it a bit more efficient.

Your problem with your first ISP is more likely to have been an authentication problem. Have a look for hints of that in /var/log/messages.

Glad to hear you are up and running.
