I don't think nmap is very usefull for a web / mail /proxy /gateway server

I prefer setup nmap on another box to check the configuration of my gateway server

Usually I use a laptop to check from my local network & from outside (at a friend house for example)

Agree, not as a default installed anyway. Contribs are available for anyone who needs to add it as an option.
