« on: May 14, 2004, 06:04:03 PM »
Hi
I'm new to this place.
Can anybody tell me the difference between SMEserver and SUSE standard server 8??
Both seem to have nice graphical user interfaces..

Thx,

Pete

Peteoax,

Your notion is so far "off the mark" you are unlikely to get what you want  :-o

(i) SUSE, in it's standard form, is a full blown desktop Linux package (distro)
that uses x-windows et al. for graphics GUI and has "gigabytes of programms".
There are "free" "live" installs on the suse website which you might want to try...

(ii) SME (e-smith) is a server&gateway lean Linux Edition (distro) and the GUI
(look at the Screenshots on the left, Main Menu here)
is basically "a website" (html) interface accessed from another PC in the network.

BOTH are very, very, very different in intention ...
(although there is a big SUSE server and small business server).

(iii) IF you have no Linux experience whatsoever you may want to first
look at the simple and ingenious completely nondestructive,
run from CD on (almost) any (Windows) PC ... KNOPPIX edition of Linux...

- Try Knoppix ... if only for a "taste of Linux"
- If you need a small business server&gateway try SME.
(but note while a start basically is download, burn iso, boot iso, answer a few questions, you will have to "invest" time&brains to modify&maintain a setup like this).
- If your business depends on it from the start, if you need "more power" try a consultant ...and he may help&suggest an applicable Linux Distro.
Quite a few consultants "hang around" this forum ... just ask  :-D

Regards

Reinhold

P.S.: If the above is "too vague" for you, I humbly suggest you stay away from setting up this stuff.
Else "just put catchwords into your favourite search engine"  Suse live eval, Knoppix, e-smith manual
............
