Centralised mail server using outlook equivalent.

Is this possible?

Someone asked me if its possible to have outlook on a centralised server so all clients can access the emails.

I was thinking, is there a way to do this with SME Server.  Would it have to function as a mail server for this to work?  Or could you install something to handle it using external mail servers (pop3)?

Thanks

Set up your Outlook clients to use IMAP and they'll all be able to see a single email account on your SME Server ... but I can't say how well the system would react to multiple simultaneous accesses to one account.  What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

Well, someone was just asking me if its possible, since they were looking for a more efficent way.  Rather than having to manually send the various emails to various people throughout the office.

Since they already have an SME server up and running, i was hoping there might be a way to do it.

They use an external provider for their emails however.

Cheers.

outlook (that is MS Outlook) is the client, not the server, therefore its installed on the users workstations and not on the server.
SME server has built-in e-mail server (POP3 and IMAP) that you can use for all (internal and external) e-mail needs. While using it for interoffice e-mail its fast and efficient since e-mail never need to leave the office via (slow) Internet connection. You need to formulate the exact requirements of what you want to and most likely its easy accomplished with SME server.

This post is no way related to sme
however they could hire a network administrator to setup a list server or forum that way all members can see the same information

outlook is a email client not a server

first computer you should be able to tell the difference between them

client gets mail    server sends mail
hope that clears it up

sme or linux can do just about do any network function you need
if you have the knowledge to use or understand it

basic networking information can be found all over the internet and the webopedia site will beginners to figure out
what something is

ie: intranet or internet  :hammer:

gbaird,
Does YOUR post related to SME?
Does it help to anyone at all?
Then I see posts (except this one) that don’t feel relevant or don’t want to help, I simply ignore them. Many do the same and that is why some unanswered post here.
Simple advise: if you don’t like some posts (or posters), including this one, just ignore them, don’t start flame wars or trolling like infamous and unhelpful person does.

Boris.

P.S. I hope this thread finished and not started. I don’t expect answer at all as this is not question, but statement, regardless of question marks used.

I was refering to the simple ability to let clients view emails stored on a central source, ie, an SME Server.  Didn't explain properly i know...

Thanks to all positive posters.  Alot of people, (on other forums aswell), suggested i look into IMAP.

Will check this out once i have some free time . Currently all free time is dedicated to Asterisk PBX :D)
