VNC access to local network via port forwarding
« on: May 26, 2004, 06:41:17 PM »
I'm trying to use the new port forwarding feature in 6.0.1 to allow me to connect from the Internet to VNC servers running on desktop PCs on my local network.

VNC requires a connection to port 5900 or 5800 on the IP address of the PC to be connected to. I have configured port forwarding to forward connections on port 5900 and 5800 of the SME server to ports 5900 and 5800 respectively on an IP address of 192.168.1.3, which is the address of a desktop PC on my network. So far I've had no success, although I can use VNC to successfully connect to the same PC from another on the same LAN.

Any suggestions?

Don't bother with port forwarding ...

Just VPN into the SME box, then connect to the local IP of each VNC box ... no fiddling with ports or anything.  Works great ... I use it almost daily with several clients for remote support.
