WinXP losing gateway to SME 5.6 after IP Config Change
« on: May 27, 2004, 12:55:34 PM »
This may be more of a windows question than an SME5.6 question.. but I am at my witts end..

I have a SME 5.6 Server running dhcp with a gateway of 192.168.0.1 to the internet.  If I configure a WinXP PC to use DHCP all is well.  If I then change the WinXP to a set IP and manually configure the gateway to the above IP, I can ping it.. I can see the default web site on SME, I can administer the server via the browser, but It will not extend out to the web  (page not found or DNS error).  Email also fails  - unable to connect to ISP Server.

Reconfigure the WinXP to DHCP and all is well again.  This occured at a particular site I was working at  - so I tried it at home, where I also use SME5.6 and same result..

This particular PC needs to be a fixed IP for other reasons..

any suggestions on how to configure the gateway or WinXP to make this work would be greatly appreciated.

PS: I disabled the DHCP on SME5.6 and restored each PC to Fixed IP - and got the same result.
Only WinXP (Home & Pro) has this fault, 3 other Win98 machines all worked perfectly.

Please Help!!

The DHCP server normally gives out the gateway and DNS servers as well as an IP address.  Have you configured these manually on your XP machine as well?

I manually set an IP address and the gateway address, but nothing in the DNS boxes.

We configured the Win98 box exactly the same, the win98 box worked and the XP box didn't.
