Has anyone managed to get SME 6.0.1 to work with a Traverse ISDN internal modem with DOV (Telstra Business)?

Having problems, modem installs and when I run the diagnosics that come with the modem it passes all tests.  As I read it that should mean the modem is working and the lines is setup Ok as it dials out etc.

When I setup/configure SME to use dialup ISDN all is Ok. I check the logs and and modem is configured and Hisax software is installed.  Looking in the messages log it shows the dial out ATDT12345678^M^M then next line "NO MSN/EAZ^M  (12345678 is the ISP number).

Have configued the modem with
/sbin/e-smith/config set ModemInit "&E12345678S14=3" (12345678 is the ISDN line out)

Think the problem is the "NO MSN" but not sure what I am doing wrong?

Try to edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chatppp0 and edit ATZ under REPORT CONNECT to be ATZ&E12345678....

By using the Traverse ISDN internal modem, can I assume this eliminates the need for the NT1 Plus II ?

Although I want to connect my 6.0.1 server at 128K, I also need to use both channels for normal voice calls (although used sparingly). Does the Traverse card allow two analogue phone connections and support DVO ?

I am signing up with WestNet for $19.95 per 64K channel (with 4 hour sessions). Due to the potential to be off/on dependant on Voice Calls & the 4 hour sessions, I have gone with Internet Plan for $16.50 from Telstra to cap the WestNet connections calls. Based on this scenario, I understand that DoV would be of no benefit, as my calls to WestNet will be capped at $16.50 anyway.

I have not used ISDN before, so if you see anything wrong with my logic please let me know. In the event the Traverse does not support DVO, I am planning to go Cisco 803 or Netgear RT338 or try to install a high speed COM card in the 6.0.1 server, and connect the NT1 with a serial cable to get true 128K.

Sorry for the long post, but I want to make sure I get it right !!! Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi all,

FYI......DOV (Data Over Voice) is only supported on On-Ramp Home Highway ISDN and not on any Telstra Business ISDN because of compression that Telstra Uses so you will pay timed data calls.

If you have ISDN HomeHighway and you have recently got it you should have the new NT1+ II box from Telstra. Out of the box you can use it like any exteral analoge modem. If you use the supplied RS232 serial cable plug it into your COM1 on your SMEServer you should be able to through the Console configurator run the server in server gateway mode and with a dialup modem. Point it to COM1 give it your username, password and 0198 XXXXXXX phone number and away you go. I have done this on Telstra Business pland ad ISDN Home.

With ISDN Home if you call any ISP other that Telstra then you pay timed calls. If you sighnup with ISDN home and tell Telstra you want to pay an additional $16.50 per month call any ISP on top of your $45.00 ISDN Home charge then you can call any ISP for the cost of a local call no timed charges. You then of course need an account with another ISP.

Using the serial port will get you either 64K or if you dialup with both channles you get around $115 to 128K. There are AT command you can use as additional strings to force it to dial 64K or if you dialup 128K you can use another string to setup DVO (Data Voice Override). I have the dialup strings somewhere in my emails but don't have the time to look right now.

Question - What would be the best way to connect up to an ISP 64K using the business account.  Do you have to pay for timed calls or do Telstra wave these if you use them as the ISP.

Was thinking that I could use existing ISP and DOV but they (the customer) already have the business account even thou only small office (6 people/PC's).

As per your post it seems that DOV is out for business accounts any idea what might be best way to go.

Also if you use the RS232 serial connection and DVO do you get charged for the second line or just the connection.

For any Bigpond ISDN it is timed local calls. You can get it capped but it really depends how far you are from the Exchange ie: 0km to 25km is an NDD1 which would cost you capped around $300 per month plus your ISP charges.

ISDN Business is not a good option unless you have some spare $$$$. If your business is run from a house your could get ISDN On-Ramp Home Highway but you would have to get it put into your own name not the name of your business.

SAT is another alternative that would probably work out a lot chaper that ISDN.
