Backup / Restore question...
« on: June 22, 2004, 03:38:59 PM »
We're currently on SME 5.5.  I've got around fourty users and associated email.

I'm preparing a new SME 6 box (new / different hardware) and would like to move JUST the user accounts, home directories, and email.  I'm not interested in keeping any config data or ibays.

I've read through several threads here, but the stopping point seems to be differences in the email directory structure.

Has anyone successfully done this?  Backup to workstation and then restore to new SME caused me some problems, not to mention the fact that I REALLY don't want the old ibays moved over, etc.

Thanks!

There are two ways you could do this.

1)
For the email reason and some other differences between 5.5 and 5.6, you should upgrade first to 5.6, then to 6.0.

Then temporarily move your ibays folder to  /tmp, then do a "backup to desktop" (not backup2ws), which will include all your user and home folders and email (now correctly migrated) as well as config data (resultant backup file needs to be less than 2Gb). Then use this file to restore to your new 6.0 box. The config that you don't want can simply be deleted or amended using the Configuration screen and server manager.

2)
Use the Lazy Admin Tools, available in the ocntribs section to transfer your users etc. You will probably need to play around with user mail folders though. You will also need to copy and restore the user email data, probably gets a bit messy, that's why option 1) seems easier to me.

Got us up to 5.6.

Fooled around with the backup, and I don't like the way the config is brought over.  Seems to cause trouble with AWStats, and I'm really just hoping for a 'clean install' with my user stuff migrated.

I downloaded / installed LAT, but it seems to grab ibay details as well.  Still need to test that.

Are there any add-on backup programs that might let me grab just what I want?  Backup to workstation won't seem to work properly for me.

The backup to desktop file can be opened with WinRAR etc (5.6 onwards), so just restore the parts of the backup file you want, manually of course using a workstation. Do it when you maove from 5.6 to 6.0

I believe you can choose what you want to transfer.
