SME 6 - 1 user email goes bad every 2 weeks. quota?
« on: June 22, 2004, 08:46:22 PM »
Hello,

Got a user on SME 6 final and since about a month ago, one user's email will drop dead. whether you check with outlook express from home or office PC, or use webmail, it says 'no new mail.'

The only way i could figure out how to fix it was to delete user account 'jbrown' and then recreate a new user 'jbrown.' then all the mail would start flowing in.

then about 2 weeks later, it would drop dead again.
so we delete user, create user, and all is well for awhile again.

recently got user exceeded quota emails right before it died again, and so checked the quota for the user with user having 170mb used, 100mb warning and 500mb max. so i upped the warning to 400mb and didnt seem to help.

i even tried to make a new user account this time 'joebrown' to see if that was an issue. same thing, dropped dead again in 2 weeks.

we have a unadulterated SME 6 install, with a couple of pseudonyms and an additional virtual domain ibay setup. no clam no spamassassin yet. none of the other 15 users setup exactly the same way, have this problem. i even have another user on IMAP and no problems as well.

Where do i start troubleshooting? i tried searching the forums but seems i am the first?! :(

We were on SME 5.5 last year for 1.5 years with nary a problem, until the webmin interface went bad and then had to do a clean install... :(
Damn, and i thought 6.0 was rock solid until now.

Thanks!

What do the logs say when the account goes bad? Try this, when the account goes south on you again try telnetting into the smtp server and send a message to the user that way and see what the logs say after it is sent. Is the account dropping at the exact same time each time? And if it is, what is happening at that time to cause this?

Also, was that 170MB for just email or his entire ibay? If it's just his email then what the hell is Joe Brown doing to get so much email in a 2 week period? :)

Hope that helps a little,

Jon

I am having the exact same problem - there seems to be no reason for it. Actually when I try to email a user from outside the local network I get a rejection messages because the user was not a valid user. I can email other users. It just seems to be random

I am having an issue that is similar - though not quite the same.

Machine is a production box in a business. Only one user is affected. He is a low volume user 3-4 messages a day. However he recieves a trade related mail-out (that he pays for) on a weekly basis. That one email is always rejected saying that the recipient user doesnt exist. The headers show that there is nothing wrong with the address. interestingly I can forward this email to him, even by cutting and pasting his address from the header!

The same folk who send the automated mail out can hand email the same report to him and he gets it fine.

There is definitely nothing wrong with the address in the list-manager they are using.

is it possible for me to use another esmith box as the mail server and just delegate to that machine instead? As I can still find no reason for these users to suddenly stop working? If it is possible do I need another public ip?

.. often when the mail screws up there is a permissions prob on the related programs or folders/data files.

Get hold of a great Python script from Charles Cazabon that will verify your qmail setup:

http://www.qcc.ca/~charlesc/software/queue_repair/docs.html

I have used this quite a bit and find it does an excellent job of both finding and fixing problems.

the weird part is that I can add new users but none of the new users work for mail. All emails set to the new users have invalid user errors.

I am willing to pay someone to fix this problem for me!

have you tried to reset the password at the prompt rather than use the panel?  This is not usually recommended bu can be useful for diagnosing probs.

I have found this work for me on the odd occasion.

Nice to see another Dwarf fan on the board :-)

hey smeghead :-) I have some interesting news. I discovered that I could send email to one of the effected users by one of my other domains, which does not have the backup mx feature from mydyndns.org

I have just turned off the backupmx feature and will wait to see if i can then send email to the effected users using the primary domain.

It is strange how I can send email to some users using the primary domain name but not all my users. Could anyone please explain that to me?
