Topic: Remove primary directories?

Hi,
I'm in a school environment and was wondering if the student users could have their private directories removed so they could make use a personal Ibay.

This allows the teachers to have access to the ibays for marking and followup tuition while keeping the students separate.

One additional help would be the backups are done from a machine with teacher access and only the stuff needed can be backed up. This saves backing up all the standard resources etc on the drive each time a backup is done.

Hi Peter

The user home directories are pretty much a standard and are needed for email and default settings. Preferably I would want to leave them intact.

As a suggestion I'd start looking at setting up user/group controls to allow for the user homes to be set so that (e.g.) the teacher group has access to the student homes.

You may be able to chown the homes so that they are student:teacher rather than the default student:student

I think the overhead of individual ibays for all students could be an issue depending on the numbers.

You need to install the chroot contrib.
This will allow you to point the username
to the ibay instead of the user folder.

Then when the student logs in, they will
be directed automatically to the ibay folder.

<example /home/e-smith/files/ibays/ibayname/html>

You could also install the webshare contrib which
would allow your students to upload their homework
from their browser if you like.

Don't delete the orginal user folders though.
This will mess things up.
