SME as domain controller
« on: July 09, 2004, 05:57:54 PM »
I have my SME set to act as the workgoup/domain controller on my network.

So, how do i add a domain?  Excuse the noob question, but i tried adding myself to a domain with windows and now my computer is listed in a different workgroup to the other computers.

I put the server name as the domain controller name in the xp config.

What if i want multiple domains?

If your sme is set as primary domain controller (PDC) and assuming you don't have other servers on the network, then your domain is established.

You probably should have used the workgroup/domain name (which I believe is the same on sme server) instead of the server name.
Unjoin that PC from the domain (ie make it a member of the workgroup only, reboot and then try again. Use this HOWTO as a guide,
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/dmay/mitel/howto/samba-howto.html

but remember to apply the patch for XP that is part of v6, see /home/e-smith/files/server-resources/regedit/...

Workstation can only be member of one domain and while joining domain, domain SID is being copied from domain controller to the workstation. If you change domain membership, you will loose the previous domain membership. You can have multiple domains on your network with different domain controllers for each of them, but each workstation can be member of one of them  only.

Ah.. i see, so i will put it back to my workgroup name then.

I mean, the main reason i asked anyway was because i wanted to replicate the idea of domains on my SME.

Is this just done through "Groups"?  Also, Does the user/groups system on sme use ldap?

Sorry if i'm way off, still on this steep learning curve of linux :D.
