How do I setup SME as nothing more than a glorified router?
« on: January 03, 2005, 08:20:10 PM »
My router is out of ports I can map... it only gives me 16 ports to map to various private subnet addresses and I need more ports mapped in.  So I got to thinking I could use a spare PC running SME as a router only... it would have an unlimited number of port mappings.

so....

I am running a box with SME _inside_ my lan - but in the context of this question, the server inside my network doesn't matter.  I want to put a 2nd SME box acting as a router only (ie private server and gateway mode).  As a test, I created a port map using the admin tools trying to route port 80 thru the router version of SME, but ended up having to move the router's apache to a different port number just to free up 80 so that it would route inside.  Now I must do this for SSH, FTP, LDAP, VPN and all the other services.  Is there an easier way than moving each service to a bogus port so that the real ports will be transpearently routed thru the SME used as a router?

Really the only service I would like to stay on the router SME box is SAMBA as a private service only.

Am I better off with the old linux router on a floppy trick?

Thanks
Wes

I think you will be better of with a distro build for the purpose. Installing a SME will be overkill. I once used smoothwall, i think you should give that a try.

Freesco 0.33 runs from a floppy.
It's easy configurabe and can be up and running in just 10-15 mins. Support on Freesco 0.33 is very good and quite quickly on responses :D

I used Freesco before but wanted some more advanced stuff on my gateway/server so I gave SME a try (looking good but indeed a bit of overkill for just a router)

Just give any distro a go and see what suits you best...

Good luck!

While you are looking at smoothwall, IPCOP, Freesco etc take a look at monowall...I enjoyed using it

anything in particular you are looking to do?
