DNS issue with Windows 2000 box behind SME6.0.1 Gateway
« on: July 19, 2004, 06:18:48 AM »
Hi,

I have a SME box configured as gateway, with two PCs connected to it.

One is a Windows 98 box and has no issues browsing web etc, the other is a Windows 2000 laptop that is unable to access any external addresses through the SME box.
When I try to ping external addresses I get an instant "Destination Host Unreachable".

I have disabled the Squid Proxy as I though this might have been causing problems - but still no go.

The Win2K machine has a static IP address with the SME box as the gateway and DNS server addresses.  I can ping all the machines on the local network, and browse accross machines.

The weird thing is I can try to Ping from the Win2K box to google.com.au and it will reply with the IP address of google, so name lookup is working (I assume), but then the actual ping will fail with Destination Host Unreachable message.

The SME box was upgraded from 5.5 to 6.0.1.  Should I do a clean re-install ??

With Thanks,

Bill

It's unlikely to be the SME if 98 works - routing / DNS is an all or nothing thing.  What does your routing table on 2K look like?

route print

Your default gateway entry should be the SME - is it?

Definately, there have been numourous posts about issues with Upgrades from 5.5 to 6.0.1.  A clean install should work fine.

Out of curiosity, when you ping your local network, are you using just the host name (WINS) or the fully qualified name (DNS)?

I reinstalled the network card, ensuring that I removed it first in Device Manager to try and force Win 2K to 'forget' the settings for the card.

It seems to have done the trick as I can now connect 'through' the gateway to the web.  The clue was that the ROUTE PRINT command had some very screwy values that were nothing like the settings in the Network control panel.  This might also explain why I was never able to get a DHCP lease from the SME box - it would just timeout.  Might try that again though.

Gotta love windows...    :-?

Thanks for your help.

Bill.
