WindowsXP & File Shares

My windowsXP client really battle to access files on SME 5.5. If I try to open them off the shared folder they hang for a few minutes.

1) Will upgrading SME fix this?
2) How easy is the upgrade, my current 5.5 server is a domain controler, file server & email server. Be specific is it just going to be: Backup - boot off new cd & update - reboot and done?

I have seen ways to get XP to work by changing the client registry, I want to steer away from this if possible.

Thanks
Scott

I think the later versions of samba work better with XP.

Generally speaking, yes.
If you have installed any add on rpms that relate to the firewall you should uninstall those first, as the firewall rules changed from v5.5 to v5.6 and those older contribs won't work and will potentially break something.

You would be better to upgrade to v5.6 first and then upgrade to v6.0 (or 6.0.1) to avoid incompatibility issues between these versions.

You will need to run the registry entry on your Win XP w/s as the default XP settings are for Windows servers and these do not allow the XP box to connect to the sme server domain correctly
