5.5 Upgrade
« on: July 23, 2004, 02:50:30 PM »
I have a stock standard 5.5 box that is used as:
A domain controler
Mail
Fileserver
Nothing has been added since the initial install. I have the 6.0.1 iso can I upgrade straight to that or do I need to download the 5.6 iso first.

Thanks
Scott

Amazing isn't it when I search for 5.5 upgrade the only meaningful forum post that I get is this one and it tells me to search.

Oh, but I thought I got here by searching?

Scott

PS:
http://no.longer.valid/phpwiki/index.php/SME%20Server%206.0.1
Says "If you are using earlier versions of the e-smith distribution (e.g. prior to e-smith 5.5) please upgrade to version 5.6 prior to upgrading to 'takeoff'."

Please confirm can go 5.5 direct to 6.0.1 or through 5.6, where can I get the 5.6 iso from?

After the search results display for "5.5 Upgrade" you need to click on Show all results in the Forum section. You will see lots of posts on the subject.

If you look on the downloads page it will lead you to this
http://public.ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/e-smith/releases/

You need to look a bit harder

My apologies!

I did the search about 2 or 3 times and just didn't pick up the show more link? Suppose I am used to a list of at least 10 or more having a show more. A short list of 5 you kind of think that is definitive.

Regarding the upgrade there seem to be many opinions going back to feb this year. Some have success doing a straight upgrade, some say go via 5.6 while others say a fresh install, backup and restore is best.

I think I will do a desktop backup, fresh install then a restore. Hope this works.

Thanks
Scott

My understanding is that it is best to remove any contribs from v5.5 especially anything related to the firewall, and then upgrade to 5.6. Then upgrade to 6.0 or 6.01 and reinstall new versions of any contribs you were previously using. Check that you get the new versions suitable for 6.x. The upgrade process takes care of mail folder new locations whereas backup & restore does not.
