Alternative distribution to SME server?
« on: July 28, 2004, 04:37:29 PM »
I've used E-Smith/SME since 4.12 and it seems like I'm not getting 6.01 to work with an Asus PR-DLS (Dual Xeon) motherboard which I bought to use for my new web-server etc.
Can anyone recommend an alternative distribution, based on i.e. RH9 which is reasonable secure and easy to administer?
Thanks in advance!
Best regards,
Terje

This is a bug in the 6.01 release.
I don't know what the prob is, but
it sure is irritating. I have a
Duron 650 and 700 system that I
can not install directly on.

I have checked around a bit becuase of
this problem, Unfortunately, SME is the
best for ease of install.

What you could do is install the system
using your previouse hardware, and then
transfer the drive. You will have to
change your /etc/lilo.conf file and update
lilo to insure that the system will boot
the smp system which seems to be available
by default.

Check around the contrib site for instructions
on how to update the kernel and modify the
lilo.conf file.

If you use customizing as your search criteria,
you should run into the official instruction pages.
Check them out.

Thanks, but I found out that there was a hardware error causing this problem and now it works fine.

What was the error and how did you fix it?

I wonder if this is the same problem I am having?

The problem turned out to be a DIMM memory module not inserted properly and I found this out by trying to install W2K, which gave a much more indicative error message.

Thanks for the info. I know this isn't
my problem because I had removed the
dimm and replaced it with others.

However, this doesn't mean that their isn't
a memory compatability issue at play. I
already eliminated the cd drive as the culprit.
Besides that, it apears that the system
is not able to mount the ram drive that
is created when booting from the cd. On the
other hand, I can run the Mandrake 10.1 isntall
as well as others, thereby indicating it may
be a misconfiguration of the resources.

Good work in any case.
