When server is up and running, i try to connect to it with fdisk, and get this error

hdc: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0X61
hdc: timeout waiting for dma
hdc: timeout waiting for dma
hdc: (__ide_dma_test_irq) called while not waiting
hdc status error: status=0X58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }

Does antone know what the problem is here?

Hi Boris. Thanks for the reply, i just not sure what you mean.

After the install of sme server, i have disconnected the CDROM, and it is not in use anymore. It is an harddisk that are generating these errors

trenskow,

What Boris means is:
Most likely your CDROM was used at hdc when you installed SME.
SME will/might still have this configuration in fstab and mtab (at least).
Just check whether your drive is mounted correctly and there is no conflict with CDROM emulation etc etc ...

Else: Give the modelno. of your IBM DRIVE !?
...and maybe the mainboard/controller date!

With 41GB your drive should be able to do DMA ... but we need more data

Reinhold

Come to think of it, it was connected as hdc.

I made a foul in my sme server trying to correct this problem, and then i took out the other harddisks an put in my 41 gb, and tried to reinstall smeserver. But again, the problem occured, when the installer tried to identify the HD

Hi Rasmus,

Asus P2B is an old Intel 440"BX" board...:-(
(around the "change of the millenium 8-)"
afaik (=AFAIRemember) this one is the culprit.
...most likely you will not get DMA with the i/o on that ...
I believe ASUS even released a beta bios for a fix (that doesn't work - please check
(Note: Asus usually has the board info written in BIG LETTERS on the pcb - just look)

In any case you shouldn't get more than 33MHz
- more wasn't available when P2B was around .-)
BTW: Have you looked into "dmesg" and checked what "hdparm" says to the capabilities ?

good luck

hi again...
i went looking in my boc of computer stuff, and found a TOPGUN motherboard, but with TXpro PCI chipset

is that better than the BX chip?

*EDIT*

When i dissasemnled my mashine, i could see, that it uses TXPro chipset.
Now i dont know what kind of motherboard it is, i was starring at it gor 5 minutes, ad the only thing i could find was "V1.2"

Rasmus,

Using a _suitable_ PCI-IDE card would help - and solve the problem...

TXPro ? ... that sounds like a PCChips Mainboard... :-o
if I remember correctly that "pro" chipset has no docs whatsoever :-(
...don't know if it's supported by Linux at all... dump it
