Error 451 from the mailserver
« on: August 11, 2004, 12:01:34 PM »
Hi,

Since a few hours i can't send any messages by outlook/outlook express. The server returned a 451 error message. I'm still possible to send through webmail, but i also cannot receive mail from the web.

I did not do any modifications on my server the last 14 days.

I restarted the server but that didn't was the solution.

I'm using SME 6.0
I've installed Spamassassin and also uses the spam blocking with the smtpfront-qmail.
This always has been working fine.

I don't know wat to do anymore.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Nico Blok :-?

FYI

I have found the problem:
the spam blocking with the smtpfront-qmail.
I removed the entries and it is working fine now.

I have just had that same problem, and no changes had recently been made to the server.
For now I disabled the RBLList settings and email is working again.
It does not really make sense to me that the server should suddenly be rejecting all messages.

I would like to sort out what the cause of this behaviour is.
Which lists did you have enabled ?

OK I have just tested all the lists from the HOWTO. There seems to be something wrong with
contacts.abuse.net
so just remove that list from the RBLList db entry and RBL blocking should work OK enabled, without blocking all email.

I have also found that too many legitimate ISPs are not conforming to the requirements for
ipwhois.rfc-ignorant.org
so I recommend that list should not be used

Here are my current recommended lists and the commands to enable them

/sbin/e-smith/config setprop smtpfront-qmail RBLList sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org:dsn.rfc-ignorant.org:postmaster.rfc-ignorant.org:abuse.rfc-ignorant.org:whois.rfc-ignorant.org:bogusmx.rfc-ignorant.org:dnsbl.njabl.org:relays.ordb.org:dnsbl.sorbs.net:list.dsbl.org

/sbin/e-smith/expand-template /var/service/smtpfront-qmail/runenv

svc -t /service/smtpfront-qmail

I am having the same problem.  The rejections started today.  Interrestingly, I am running two email servers both with RBLList's and have the identical problem.  The logs have numerous entries as follows:

2004-08-11 11:06:34.149063500 rblsmtpd: 134.48.20.169 pid 14544: 451 postmaster@localhost
2004-08-11 11:07:53.801105500 rblsmtpd: 134.48.20.169 pid 14564: 451 postmaster@localhost
2004-08-11 11:08:53.053737500 rblsmtpd: 134.48.20.169 pid 14584: 451 postmaster@localhost

I had both servers set to check the following lists(right from the RBL How To):

sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org - (a combination of the two spamhaus lists)
dsn.rfc-ignorant.org
postmaster.rfc-ignorant.org
abuse.rfc-ignorant.org
whois.rfc-ignorant.org
ipwhois.rfc-ignorant.org
bogusmx.rfc-ignorant.org
dnsbl.njabl.org
relays.ordb.org
dnsbl.sorbs.net
contacts.abuse.net
list.dsbl.org

Normally the logs give an indication of which list the email is being rejected by.  In this case the common 451 postmaster@localhost pops up only.

My initial thought was that one or more of the lists is misbehaving.  I reconfigured the RBBLList to eliminate the *-ignorant.org groups, but this did not cure the problem.  I have not tried the list one-by-one, which will be my next task, but will have to wait till this evening.

Deactivating the lists entirely has solved the problem of blocking all emails, so at least the mail (and the spam) is getting through.

You guys, the removal of the "abuse.net" RBL is indeed what was causing all my server's e-mail to be rejected; it didn't matter whether I was trying to send e-mail through a POP3 program, or waiting for mail being sent from outside e-mail accounts .... nothing at all was being allowed in.

I got the following response no matter what I tried to do e-mail-wise, in my POP3 mail program:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'admin@******.net'. Subject 'Test e-mail', Account: '*********', Server: 'mail.*********.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '451 postmaster@localhost', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 451, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

I was literally pulling my hair out!!  I have been trying so hard to fix this problem .... I re-built my server (software & hardware), tried different network cards, trying random DNS server combinations, the list went on and on.  I came THIS close to ... <gulp> ... having someone in my organization build a .... a .... Exchange Server.  Yes, that deperate.

Then I tried, once again, in my almighty quest to come to a possible positive solution, to look around.  Little did I know that a simple RBL removal would DO THE TRICK!!!  That "abuse.net" being removed instantaneously solved my problems.

I had removed all but the last 3 RBLs on my list (I used every one offered; the server has 512MB RAM on it so I wasn't worried) and was reading posts at the same time.  When I removed the abuse.net one, everything worked.  Everything.  I've been adding a new RBL and restarting the service using the link in the Config Manager, and each time I can send e-mail.  I've made my way all the way back to the top of the list again, minus one, and it still works!

You guys, read posts carefully.  One thing, in this case, was all it took.  You never know how simple a complicated problem's answer can be.

I have experienced the same issue with 1 of 2 SME servers i built within the last couple of days, one works fine with the removal of the abuse.net RBL, with the second server the removal change the error to:
"Error  There was an error sending your message: unable to send data"
Shutting off the SpamFilter resolves this issue and sends the email, also the receiving of all email ceases one the SpamFilter in enabled.

Any Ideas?
Thanks Keith

Did you check your config database property after the change to see that it was correctly done

grep RBLList /home/e-smith/comfiguration

I will check your suggestion.

I did see an error in the logs smtpfront-qmail/current log appear when spamfilter is enabled

This disappears when spamfilter is shut off..

here is a cross section with the same email with the spam filter on then turned off...

====  grep RBLList /home/e-smith/configuration

Referencing your suggestion;

Checked both systems, the one that is working and the one that is not.

Both systems do not have a RBLList entry ???

puzzling !!!
