Size limit uploading through SME (not to SME)?
« on: August 12, 2004, 10:33:04 AM »
Hi all,

Just needed a quick confirmation from anyone in the know.

One site has their web site hosted externally with a hosting provider. Workstations are behind SME 5.6 U6 (in server and gateway mode) and have no problem accessing the website (Hostnames and addresses is set correctly to allow this). That is no problems generally except for problems uploading largish PDF files to it.

The website is driven by some sort of php or scripted engine system where the users login and make changes to the website contents via the web interface put there by the website developers (a bit like a blog engine, if you know what I mean). Amongst the functions provided is a sort of document library page where they can tag and upload files (PDFs usually) from their local PC to the website. Apparently, small files uploads OK but large ones don't (I'm waiting for them to tell me what exactly is large).

The web developers are suspecting that something is blocking large file uploads from the user's network as they claim they can upload those same files via the same interface externally.

Therefore, I just want confirmation that there really is nothing in SME that might be limiting their upload size.

TIA !

Kelvin

The default PHP setting limits uploads to 2MB!

I believe there is a how-to if you do not want to make a custom-template fragment to change this setting.

If you have any difficulties, let me know I will try and find it...

Hi Paul,

Doesn't the 2MB PHP upload limit only apply to uploads to the SME server itself, not through it ?

I would have imagined that in the given scenario I described, SME only ever behaves like a "router" and not interfere with the amount of data being uploaded to a website hosted externally. Why would the PHP limit affect data being uploaded to the external website ?

Sorry, my bad, didn't read properly!

If your hosting company does not have the same 2M limit (most seem to use this default) then I can't see any possibility that the problem has anything to do with the SME Gateway. The only thing I can think of is that there is some type of packet loss problem and the transfers are failing. I have had a similar problem (but the reverse) and it turned out to be my MTU settings.

Sorry I can't be of more assistance, I belong more in the General Forum :P

I'm back on this issue now after having to attend to other matters of late.

OK. I've done some more testing and it definitely is a SME issue. If I connect directly to the internet (via a normal el-cheapo NAT device), uploads works fine, big or small.

When using SME as the gateway, then small PDFs uploads OK. Attempts to upload larger PDFs results in an immediate Page cannot be displayed error (no delay at all, hit the Upload button and the Page cannot be displayed error comes up immediately). When uploading small PDFs through SME, the slight delay as you watch the bar creep along on the status bar of IE is as expected, and the file uploads correctly. But as soon as you try large PDFs (I've been testing with 1+ - 2+ MB PDFs), and the Page cannot be displayed error comes up immediately again.

I have also tested from multiple clients sites (they all use various different ISPs) and as long as they are not behind SME, it works. But if the connection is behind SME as gateway, the same problem occurs.

Help anyone ?

Yeah, I'd like to know the answer to that one myself.
In my case it's a .pdf (4,5Mb) enclosed in a mail (using webmail). Some thirty seconds of upload attempt, then the -Page cannot be displayed- error.
I seem to remember having read about it somewhere on contribs about half a year ago, but I can't find it now.

Hi,

I've fixed the problem by disabling transparent proxy on SME.

BTW Wyron, when e-mailing via SME's webmail, the PHP size limit will apply to you. Search the forums about the webmail size limit and you should be able to find the necessary changes you need to increase that limit.
