Which parallel port setting should be used

My question is what Parallel port mode should be set. Normal ? ECP ? EPP ?  or does it matter ?  E-smith now seems using polling mode for the printer.

Some background info :-

When I queue up a printer job, the output of is as below.  However, after a while, the queue entry disappeared but nothing comes out from the printer.

"lpq -P xerox"

 Server: pid 1644 active
 Unspooler: pid 1647 active
Status: processing 'dfA643p133.samuel.linux-site.net', size 473645, format 'l', IF filter 'none - passthrough' at 17:04:58.318
Rank   Owner/ID                  Class Job Files                 Size Time
active pc2@p133+643                 A   643 httpwww.e-smith.org 473645 17:04:58

-----------
"dmesg" output

parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [SPP,PS2,EPP]
parport_probe: failed
parport0: no IEEE-1284 device present.
lp0: using parport0 (polling).
NET4: AppleTalk 0.18 for Linux NET4.0
lp0: using parport0 (polling).

Thanks a lot for reading all these, I have been annoyed by this problem for a while.  I did have a successful experience before using a different hardware and a different printer.

I fix printers for a living.. I would suggest you set it to normal to start off with.. then try EPP.. I run into more problems with ECP then anything.  But any of them should work.. Have you tried just going to a dos prompt and trying ot print to the printer.. make sure the parallel port cable and everything is good?
