SME 6.0 ISO CD doesn't work on DELL PowerEdge 2200 server
« on: August 19, 2004, 11:30:20 PM »
Hello,

I have a DELL PowerEdge 2200 server wich use a PCI card for my 120 Go HDD and onboard SCSI controler for booting up on my SCSI CD drive.

I have no problem with my ISO CD for SME 5.6 but with ISO CD for SME 6.0, I have a message about a "KickStart" file (ks.cfg) wich is not on my CD !???

It's strange.

May-be somebody tell that before me... then sorry.

Have a nice day.

This may be way off, but did you check the iso image with md4 checksum? In the past I have had corrupted images.

The only other problem I have had with a Dell is that it did not want to boot from the CD no matter what I did. I built a XPC SFF box to replace it and gave the Dell to charity.

Hello,

It's possible, I need to check my ISO file but, how to do it, please ?

If not, until installation of SME 6.0 on a virgin HDD, installer ask me for the 'ks.cfg' file and try to open (it? or another file(s)??) from the floppy drive.

If HDD contains SME 5.6 at start, when installer of SME 6.0 ask for the 'ks.cfg' file, I have a screen to load the file from Local HDD or CDROM. If I choose CDROM, the problem is unchanged. If I choose Local HDD, installer ask for what partition (dev/hde or dev/hdf) and path to access the RMPs files.

I think, it's possible that SME 6.0 CD contain an error about but, it's also possible it's because I use HDD on PCI adapter for my HDD.

Also, I remember that : First or second time I tryed to install SME 6.0, I had "error on line 116" (or 162 ? , sorry) in a script file but what file ??? GRRRRRR can't remember.

But, Why SME 5.6 installer have no problem and why SME 6.0 have problem ????

I think it's because a little error is in a file of the SME 6.0 installer. Also, when you look on the CD, some files are missing if you compare with the SME 5.6 CD but, it's may be because SME 5.6 was released by MITEL. Right? (missing files are about license, etc...)

Thank you for your help.

HP

P.S.
When I'll have time (possible this afternoon), I'll try SME 6.0 CD on a "simple" Pentium Based computer like HP VL6 without PCI controler card nor SCSI adapter, etc...
What is a XPC SFF ????
Do you know how to obtain DELL EDO 168 pins memory for my server ? I need more 128Mb and I buyed my server for 59€uros and I can't pay more than 60 €uros for that because, for the same price, I have another complete DELL server (but, why not, I'll have spare parts, and second Processor with 128Mb of memory lol!)
Also, a last question about that, is it really usefull to have two processors on a computer to obtain more performance ? In the case of this DELL server ???

Thank you very much for your future help.

I'm Sorry, it is the 6.0.1 SME iso CD.... :-(

Hello,

I used this link provided by a friend : http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/smeserver/releases/6.0.1/iso/smeserver6.0.1-01-20040316.iso

It is the SME 6.0.1 (I'm very sorry, my computer where this link was stocked was out of order since few days...) :-D   :-(

How to verify the checksum given in the file on the same FTP folder of the iso file ?

But, if ISO is corrupted, WinRar must tell me that, no ?
I burned my CD with Nero without error or warning message.

May be a problem in th list of files to be installed if not, the new installer doesn't support my SCSI adpater but, it's wrong because, installer starts since this CD drive ! ??? :-/

It's strange.

md5 checksum is used to verify the file you downloaded to your hard drive is the same as the one on the host server. There are many utilities for this. A net search "md5" will result in many hits. Here is a link to one utility: http://tinyurl.com/8mnn

It very simple to use. Get the md5 checksum from the very same server from which you downloaded the ISO image. Open the utility and point it at the ISO image file on your local drive, and enter or open the md5 checksum file. The utility will tell you if they match. If they match your local file is good to go.

I don't know. But I would guess the CD you created has a fault of some kind. The CD must be burned as a "master" or "bootable" disk. Otherwise the machine will "see" the CD but not try to boot.

What is a XPC SFF ?

Sorry about the obscure reference. SFF stands for Small Form Factor. It is a style of case. The SFF case is typically a bit larger that a shoe box. Roughly 22cm x 22cm x 32cm. Bigger than a rack mount and smaller that a tower. I like to stack them up; looks cool.

There are a number of manufacturers. One is Shuttle and they produce the XPC line of SFF cases and bare bones systems.

Initially these were popular with gamers but they are gaining users in business and other areas.

I am in North America, so my prices won't be relevant to you. FWIW, check out newegg.com and chipmerchant.com, for comparisons with your local suppliers.

Solution for MY problem
« Reply #5 on: September 04, 2004, 10:40:48 PM »
Hello,

My problem about the 'ks.cfg' file was resolved when I exchange my SCSI CD-ROM drive with another, wich is newer.

But, now, the problem is : " Why SME 5.6 have no problem and SME 6.0.1 have problem ? "

So, I think about a different CD-ROM package to manage my SCSI CD-ROM. How to check that please ? I'm a beginner, don't know how to nether where to look about.

Thank you very much.
